Teacher Message...
As a parent of a young child, there has been nothing more important to me than the peace of mind knowing that my child is in a safe and stimulating environment with a nurturing and responsible adult.
But that was just for a start…
With that in mind, I created, what I feel, is a unique Preschool that incorporates Reggio, Montessori and Nature School environments, principles and approaches. I also made it my personal goal to exceed the Fraser Health licensing standards and requirements wherever I could.
It is the Preschool that I was hoping to find when I, myself,
was searching care for my own little guy. Providing this program on my own property allows me to offer a peaceful educational setting with a small group of children who receive more one on one time for guidance and learning.
My play-based program utilizes an emergent curriculum inspiring daily learning opportunities to discover and explore in areas such as; sensory experiences, practical life skills, science and nature, language and literacy, math, music, art, cultural enrichment, nutrition, and physical activity.
As each child comes to Preschool with their own unique set of strengths, interests, abilities, and needs, I adapt my teaching and caring techniques daily to create an inclusive, loving atmosphere where diversity is honoured, friendships are fostered, and character is cultivated.
At The Little Woodland Academy children will develop the habits, attitudes, and skills essential in establishing life-long joy of learning.
My Philosophy...
I believe that ‘play’ is a complex and crucial part of early childhood and that in order to develop holistically, a child has both a need and a right to each type of play. These types of play are most effective when child led and set against nature wherever possible with an educator’s guidance and focus on values over academics.
My Experience...
After teaching young children in aquatics, recreation, and early childhood education programs for over 26 years, I decided to dedicate my in the most rewarding field of Early Childhood Education.
Managing large recreation facilities (including preschools), staff and families with risk management as a priority has prepared me well for the day to day supervision of little ones. I was also fortunate to have gained teaching experience in both formal Montessori and Reggio centres.
I like to utilize, what I feel to be, the most effective elements of the Reggio, Montessori, Waldorf, Nature School and Traditional pedagogical approaches. Blending their teaching techniques, materials, and environments allows me to create a blended approach that supports each unique child in their own journey of self and world discovery.
And as an vocal advocate for the mental health of children, I also have a calling for supporting and guiding children’s emotional and mental health. Creating learning opportunities for effective self regulation and successful social skills is one of the most important daily learning experiences I provide at Preschool.
My Certifications...
Over the past 20 years, I have achieved post secondary in:
o Professional Counselling
o Recreation Leadership & Management
o Early Childhood Education
I have also been certified in:
o Standard First Aid & CPR
o AED
o Food Safe Level 1

o And more
Location...
The Little Woodland Academy is located at my newer home nestled in the Lower Sumas Mountain, a few blocks east of Whatcom Road, in upscale Ridgeview Estates. We are in the Mountain Elementary and ASIA school catchment.
I am fortunate to offer a private and lush property on a quiet, no-thru culta-sac across from untouched forests of ALR land.
A play area is so much more than just a playground, it offers a variety of features to explore and interact with. Designed with nature play in mind as well as the traditional elements that children have come to be familiar with, I wanted to ensure that the children had plenty of grassy area to run, roll and lay on but also fun interactive features.
The fully fenced outdoor play area is surrounded with tall green cedars and south-facing yard and for sunny Vitamin D with tree-shaded areas on hot days.
The garden begins to bloom in early spring with pink, yellow, purple, white, and lime green colors. Butterflies, fluffy bees (Oliver and I call them Teddy Bees), dragonflies, hummingbirds and robins flock to the garden for the mint, lemongrass, sage, and lavender.
Children can cross the wooden footbridge over the dry riverbed to a Mud Kitchen area and ‘bake’ some ‘mud pies’ or work on some messy fun at the sensory table or outdoor easel under the large covered patio.
A little cottage flanked by sand play box and water play box is at the centre of the play area inviting dramatic minds to create active storylines. Or tend to the mini vegetable garden to see what is ready to harvest.
My play area sparks the imagination, promotes discovery, engages sensory play, and promotes outdoor adventure.
