Description

Hello!
My name is Danielle and I have been providing childcare in my home for almost 16 years. I am a Montessori teacher in training, and I am also fully bilingual and a non-smoker. I offer a prepared Montessori environment with many various activities that are appropriate for children of all developmental stages, and many ongoing and stimulating opportunities for fun and creativity.

My entire home is a prepared environment and therefore all areas of the home are used. I offer a fun, stimulating, child-oriented environment, and as a responsible childcare provider I offer many opportunities for creativity as well as self-guided and independent learning. As for my personality as a caregiver, I am very outgoing, creative, fun and a real child-at-heart. I am naturally very nurturing and the children in my care receive a lot of well-needed TLC.

I am a stay-at-home Mom of 3 beautiful children. I have 2 daughters ages 11 and 12 and a 6 year old son. My children are schooled at home under the Montessori method of education. As I parent myself, I know that the natural question to ask is how can I homeschool children and care for other children as well? My answer to this, is that this is a PREPARED environment, meaning that there are A LOT of hands-on activities for children of all ages to use and have access to, and therefore it is very much like a regular Montessori classroom. Each child in my care has one on one time with me, as well as opportunities for group activities. I organize my days well ahead of time and any new lessons for my older children are done either during quiet time when the younger children are resting( New lessons are also naturally very short). Learning times in our home are also not restricted to Monday to Friday, weekends are also learning times for our family. I love to teach so I always have many ongoing projects and activities. My older children are very independent in their learning and their work is planned ahead of time. Just like a Montessori teacher can organize her classroom with children of various ages and stages of development, I do the same. Organization is key. A lot of time is spent in the evenings preparing for the next day, preparing for each child, not just for the daycare as a whole. The best way to know how it all unfolds during the day is to take the opportunity to come to observe for a morning.

As for my past experience, I am a former pediatric Registered Nurse, and I have worked at CHEO and well as provided home care nursing for pediatric patients. I have worked as a dance teacher, a Sunday School teacher and have worked as a substitute teaching assistant at The Ottawa Montessori School. I am a former foster parent with the Childrens' Aid Society of Ottawa. I am also presently being licensed through a childcare agency and therefore I abide by all ministry standards. I have also taught for the nursing program at La Cite Collegiale.

Although I had a nursing career that I absolutely loved, my priorities changed once we decided to have our children. We wanted our children to develop a love of learning that will last a lifetime, as well as have the opportunity to learn according to their individual learning styles. Each child has their own learning styles and I respect their individual wants and needs, which is where my passion and motivation for childcare comes from. I absolutely LOVE to teach and I feel extremely blessed to have the chance to work in an area that I feel so passionate about, and I love watching my own love and passion for learning extend to the children in my care.

Please be aware that we do have pets in my home, in fact, our home is filled with many interesting pets. We have reptiles, snakes, a dog named Marlie and birds. ALL pets are extremely safe and very VERY friendly. All the children have always loved the animals and they have always been a great opportunity for learning about habitats, basic care of animals and much more. There is no animal in my home who is not 100% friendly. I would not have any pet in my home that I felt would pose any kind of threat. So, animal loving familes will love this place!

As a childcare provider, I have always been very flexible with my daycare families, and I view communication as crutial in assuring that great quality care is given at all times. Therefore, when coming for an interview, please NEVER feel that a question is inappropriate, because there is no such thing as an inappropriate question when it comes to finding the best care for your child.

As for our daily routine, our days usually start off with some free play or self-directed learning, followed by a bilingual musical circle-time and stories. We do a lot of baking in my home so the children will bring food home a few times per week. We love spending time outside, we love picnics, outdoor obstacles and games. Since this is a Montessori environment, each child has responsibilities such as helping prepare and serve lunch and snacks, they are responsible for washing their own dishes and tidying up after lunch. Once lunch is over we get our pillows and security items, I play some soft and soothing lullaby music, read more stories and prepare for our quiet time. Those who sleep in the afternoons are put down for a rest and those who do not spend those few hours with a quieter activity. Sometimes we make playdough, play board games or make a craft. We make crafts in the mornings as well. After quiet time we spend more time outdoors with either planned activities and/or free play.

Nutrition: the Canadian Food Guide is followed when preparing the menu for the children. I do not use pre-packaged pre-prepared foods with preservatives. I make food using fresh ingredients and over-amounts of fats and sugar are avoided. The children also learn to help out in the kitchen by helping make breads, soups, muffins and snacks. I avoid all foods with preservatives. Due to the amount of time it can take to prepare food for the day, I make all food the night before (with the exception of breakfast). Otherwise, too much time would be spent in the kitchen during the day. On average I serve a cold lunch twice a week and hot meals three times a week. Given that the children also make foods on a regular basis as a part of our daily activities, they will be bringing foods home to share with their familes.

Although this is a prepared Montessori environment, in addition, I do offer many many chances for creativity. We do get messy a lot, so please be aware that changes of clothes are required. If you would like to learn more about the Montessori environment, please check on Google or You Tube. There is a lot of great information and it will assist you in making a decision on whether or not this is the kind of environment that you are wanting for your child. Quality of care is crutial, therefore do start looking many months ahead of time and never feel that you need to settle. Finding the type of environment that will suit you and your child's needs can take time, and it is very important to find a caregiver that shares your views on parenting and childcare. Togther, you and your childcare provier can ensure that your child is adapting well and is happy in their home -away-from-home.

I do accept children of all ages. In my home, babies are not left to cry and have a lot of love and attention, as well as a lot of stimulation. The Montessori method of education is all about the "prepared environment" and therefore I follow the recommendations for all age groups. Babies are not confined, but given the opportunity to crawl, climb and explore. My home is fully child-proof.

There is certainly a lot more information I can offer, so I am in the process of creating a website that will assist you in getting to know me better. Feel free to call anytime to book an appointment. Please do be aware that I do not offer initial first meetings during the day as I am working, so interviews are booked during the evenings or weekends. After our initial interview, if you are interested in coming to observe our routine and see how I interact with the children, you can then book a daytime meeting. I need a few days of advance notice to let my other daycare parents know since I usually do not allow any visitors in my home during daycare hours.

The first 2 weeks of care is considered a trial period. Therefore, if parents are not satisfied with the quality of their child's care, they can withdraw their child from daycare within 24 hours notice. An integration period is always recommended, and I do not charge for integration periods until it has reached full days.
Admission conditions
Must love pets. Must love getting messy! ;-) I do take the children out a couple of times a week so this daycare is appropriate for parents who accept for their children to be taken out. I like to take the children out about twice a week (NOT including the playgroups and parks we walk to...). I have many various memberships so the children have great ooportunities for wonderful outings. Our memberships include: The Museum of Science and Technology, the Agriculture Museum, Monkey Around, Mayfair Theatre as well as the YMCA. The YMCA offers many wonderful classes for preschool aged children and babies during weekdays. I cover all cost of activites for the children. We also go the the library once or twice a week, as they have wonderful programs for babies, toddlers and preschoolers as well. One place I do NOT take the children is to the home of other daycare providers, as the ratios need to be respected a t all times to ensure the wellbeing and safety of all children. I also do not take them to the pool. We do enjoy going to the park, we are there everyday when the weather permits. We also have playgroups(both in french and english) and other various classes that are within walking distance as well.

There is absolutely no smoking and no drinking of any kind in my home, and I ask that parents also respect these rules. I also do not use any kind of corporal punishment in my home, and request that parents also abide by this rule.

I have an open-door policy, parents are encouraged to drop into ANY daycare to check up on your child. Just know that I do keep the door locked during the day so a parent can either call or knock at the door when dropping in. I make it a habit not to be talking on the phone during the day, but if I know you will be calling I do make sure to answer. I realize that in general caregivers do not want parents calling during the day to check up on their children, but I in fact do not have an issue with this. I am a parent myself and when I had my kids in care I called everyday, so I understand the need. ;-)

Children with allergies and special needs are welcomed. If there is a child in my care with any kind of allergy I have always accomodated my environment apporpriately.
