Description

MotherHen Babies Home Daycare

Welcome to Motherhen Babies. I am a mother of two (11 years and 6 years old). In addition to my 11 years of experience as a mommy, I also have several years of experience being a nanny, babysitter, day camp and overnight camp counselor, volunteering in two different Elementary Schools during my co-op as well as being a "Big Sister" in Toronto (BBBS Toronto). I have an extensive background in the arts as well as teaching visual art to young children.

I'm a passionate, creative, compassionate and caring person. I love to learn about everything and share that excitement with my own children as well as with the children in my care. Kids are my life.

After extensive research into many different teaching Philosophies (Montessori developed by Maria Montessori, Waldorf philosophy and Reggio approach; I decided I wanted to use a play-based learning environment and integrate portions of the three methods mentioned above, here at Motherhen Babies. I believe that play-based learning encourages creativity, resourcefulness, cooperation and problem solving; so singing, games, reading, language, physical activity and free play are on the daily schedule. The toys in my home are made of safe materials and all have been chosen to encourage imagination and the development of gross/fine motor-skills. I also believe that every moment of the day is a learning opportunity, "Teachable Moments".

Teachable moments are important for kids because they provide meaningful contexts to introduce or expand on something you want children to learn about. This way they can be used to open conversations with kids – to find out what they’re thinking about. Conversations with the kids will help in the development of their language, communication and reasoning skills.

Infants’ and toddlers’ level of curiosity is much more basic than for preschoolers. For infants and toddlers, it’s as basic as how to open and close a door or how to get food to your mouth. Preschool kids have a sense of language and have more advance cognitive development. Preschoolers have a natural curiosity about all aspects of life. They have more of an imaginative quality and they can express it. Their language skills are more advanced so they have a greater dimension to their learning.

As a provider, I try to identify teachable moments by observing and listening to each child, following their lead and looking for interesting occurrences. Listening and observing the child’s behavior is very important. If they’re spending more time on a particular toy or squishy grass, I ask them open-ended questions about what they’re doing. Listening to what they’re saying and if they stay engaged in the conversation and the activity, I always try and encourage them to discuss it.

I believe children need structure, routine, consistent boundaries and expectations.

I like to take the children out to drop in centers and/or parks as much as possible. My home is within a block from a great park with lots of good equipment and a splash pad.

I serve very healthy meals and snacks based on recommendations from the Canadian Food Guide, with a good balance of whole grains, vegetables, fruits and protein. I don't serve white bread or pasta, I rarely use processed foods and I try to use Organic or local foods as much as possible.

I only use green cleaning products that are non-toxic and child safe (Toy Disinfectant: Benefect Botanical Disinfectant). I'm environmentally conscious and encourage my children to have a love and respect for nature and all creatures great and small by compassion and empathy.

The hours I would prefer are between 7:00 am - 6 pm, but that is slightly negotiable. Full and part time care will be considered.

I have a recent police check and references available upon request.

I am fully certified by the Red Cross in CPR and First Aid.

I truly look forward to hearing from you and your family!

Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any questions or wish to come for a visit.
