Description

*****CURRENT OPENINGS: 2 Full time and/or 2 Part time******

I am a AMI accredited Montessori Directress with a specialty in children aged 2-6; however, I am currently in the process of getting my 0-3 diploma. My home daycare will be based on the Montessori methodology. I also hold an Honours B.A. in Communications with a double minor in Film and Popular Culture.

The Parts of a "Typical" Day:
I think it is important for me to stress that a typical day can only be defined by the children; their personalities, interests and their temperaments that day. I plan to ensure that the following aspects are incorporated into everyday:

1. Outdoor play: 30mins-2hrs+ a day to play in a park, go for a walk, go on day trips, harvest the garden, play in the backyard, etc.

2. Interest based play: Essentially, to let the children engage in "play" that interests them. I will have toys for the children to play with and you are free to send any toys that your child is particularly attached to. I hope to also have Montessori activities for the children to engage with, such as a an imbucare box using various geometric shapes.

3. Practical Life: activities that are representative of everyday life. For instance, I plan to have the children help me prepare snacks and lunch (if they want to). This would involve the children assisting me with removing the food from tupperware and putting it onto plates for consumption. Following snacks/lunch I would ask the children to assist me in cleaning the dishes (either by washing the dishes or by putting them into the dishwasher).

4. Naps: taken in the afternoon unless specified otherwise by you.

(Occasional daytime activities):

5. 'Day' Trips:
5a. Oaks'n'Acorns (all year round): an activity center for children and parents. There are a variety of classes offered in a variety of areas, I was thinking of an art class if the children were interested. Please take a look at their website for more information: http://www.oaksnacorns.com/about-us/#
5b. East Lynn Farmers Market (Thursday's in Summer - October): A farmers market by a park and a splash pad. There are also family friendly activities that the community puts on at the park during the market (this activity list is not yet posted).
5c. Silly Goose Toy Store Activities (Summer - October): they have musicians and story book characters come in to read books, sing songs, etc.

While engaged in these activities I will watch for opportunities I can use to provide lessons to the children. For instance:
- teaching the children about proper road safety while going to the park across the street.
- teaching the children about nature when we are out for a walk.
- teaching the children about vegetables/fruits while we are harvesting the garden.
- providing social experiences for the children to interact with other children/adults by attending activities at Oaks'n'Acorns, the Farmers Market, various parks, etc.

Types of Montessori Activities/Materials:
1. Classified Cards: similar to flash cards but they deal with one topic in great detail. For instance, classified cards that deal with the kitchen would showcase all the items you would typically find in a kitchen i.e. fridge, stove, knife, fork, spoon, spatula, ladle, etc.
2. Grace and Courtesy: This is an activity that I will do with the children through example. For instance, I will conduct myself in a way that is graceful from movements to speaking. I will ensure that I am courteous when interacting with everyone i.e. I will thank the children for cleaning up after themselves, I will shake their hands and greet them every morning, I will shake their hands before leaving every day, etc.
3. Practical Life: As briefly stated above, I will provide activities that are representative of real life tasks such as washing dishes/putting dishes away in the dishwasher, harvesting fruits/vegetables from the garden, cleaning up wet spills (from washing dishes), toilet training, sweeping up spills. I would like to clarify that the Practical life activities will not be used for your child to clean my house but rather as a way to provide purposeful work which will aid your child in having a sense of accomplishment and purpose to their life.
4. Montessori specific materials: Seen here (http://www.nienhuis.com/infant-toddler.html) may be purchased throughout the year. Dependent on finances.

Other non-Montessori activities:
1. Reading Books: The reading list will be specific to real life situations/topics. The books may be about going to the zoo and the animals you'll see at the zoo, the animals that live on a farm, the seasons, the days of the week, getting dressed, favorite foods, taking care of a pet, etc.
2. Toilet training: I am currently still reading how best to approach this task. So, at this time, I don't have the specifics of how it will look but, I will provide details as to how I plan to approach it once I am done my research.
3. As I get to know your child I will be adding to the activities/materials based on their personality and interests. I will inform you as to the new additions as the year progresses.
Admission conditions
I have two small dogs, they won't be around the children but it is important that there are no allergies to animals.

A few tips...

Always ensure that your child receives quality care by taking the time to investigate the provider and by asking for references! We simply cannot verify the claims of every daycare provider.
