At Granville House we strive to involve the children in their natural world as much as possible using monthly themes relating to nature.
GH aims to prepare the children for entry into kindergarten by focusing on all aspects of early development, enabling the child to build independence and confidence whilst being immersed in playful experiences.
We take time each day to explore in our own backyard. The backyard has many elements to it – vegetable garden area, forest area, paved surface for riding toys, large grass area, stepping-stone path through the evergreen shrubs. Having a fully-fenced yard gives the children the opportunity to explore independently, indulge their curiosity and build confidence. The children take part in the complete gardening cycle – seed to table. They are involved with choosing seeds, planting, watering, harvesting. They even help prepare lunch with their harvested vegetables! The children learn about compost and why worms are good, they help fill our numerous bird feeders, they watch squirrels gathering food and they dig in the mud.
We often take walks to nearby Van Dusen gardens, where we have a membership. This is a great opportunity for the children to explore nature, interact with the art installations and practice appropriate public behavior.
OTHER DETAILS:
An early drop-off option is available. This is convenient for parents working nearby at BC Children’s Hospital. GH is large, bright and child friendly. There is a classroom with large windows, wood floors and educational toys. Snacks and lunch are provided; our food is always fresh, home cooked and age appropriate. |
