I have a vested interest in pediatric development and the way in which infants and toddlers learn. For me, it is all about the practical experiences that children have that they learn best. There is no better feeling then when a child has a discovery, an ‘aha’ moment, especially when it’s on your watch. I love being able to foster the developmental domains and provide unique learning experiences for babies and toddlers.
My style is eclectic, thematic and BUSY! Some child centers believe that academics and teaching is most important. Others believe that childcare programs should be play based. Leslieville-Riverdale Alphabet Academy is a wholesome interplay of building and fostering competencies, social skills, academics, building self-esteem as well as bolstering confidence. Here, children ‘learn by doing’ and they learn from each other as well.
Each week is a new theme so it doesn’t allow for recycled activities. Program plans are methodical and carefully planned and parents are well aware of the week’s activities. In fact, I often ask that parents contribute to the different themes at home as well. Expect to get an invite to an event sooner than later!
Alphabet Academy is dedicated to getting to know your child’s unique personality so that their needs can be directly met. With all children in my care, I like to observe their ways of exploring and learning and I can get a sense for what next steps need to be taken to enhance their learning experience. For example, if I have a weekly theme on the zoo, both my infants and toddlers will be participating in the same theme but their activities will be modified to support their individual learning. There is nothing more disappointing than a child who is bored because the activity is too easy or frustrated because it is too advanced. ‘Learning by doing’ is important so that children can experiment, manipulate and explore for themselves. Have you ever watched a baby play at sand and water table for the first time? Or witness them ‘finger paint’ for the first time? It is truly amazing to see.
Alphabet Academy promotes community awareness and a sense of belonging to the community. Whether it is a trip to the local fire station or a playground visit to Sprouts, we value being out and about in the community. We have local entertainers/teacher’s visit us at Alphabet Academy’s home base. We also take trips that are within walking distance of home base (weather permitting). There is a lot for us to do!
Alphabet Academy provides morning and afternoon snacks as well as a 3-course lunch. Meals are organic wherever possible. All ingredients are ethical, local and fresh where possible. Meals are created on site and there are no additives. Menus are provided for parents ahead of time. Recipes are taken from children’s cookbooks and have the kid stamp of approval! Vegetarian options are available as well. Children’s birthdays and special occasions are celebrated with tasty treats! (Okay, fine, my birthday is celebrated too. I will be 19 AGAIN this year). |
