Description

I am an AMI certified Montessori teacher with over 20 years of experience as a Montessori director. I've set up a home based daycare which follows the Montessori philosophy and consists of specialized Montessori educational materials that build a rich and stimulating environment for children to learn.

Unlike traditional daycares, I've created an atmosphere that fosters a love of learning and growth of functional independence among children, not a place where children are only entertained.

I follow the Montessori philosophy and curriculum as I believe the Montessori educational method helps a child develop the prime elements of character such as creativity, responsibility, self-esteem, independence, self-discipline and perseverance.

The Montessori toddler program is divided into six areas: Practical life, Sensorial, Language, Math, Science and Geography.

PRACTICAL LIFE: Practical life activities are the activities of everyday life. Children learn various different skills such as care of themselves, the environment, movement of objects and are also taught common courtesy. Practical skills are taught by several activities such as pouring, using a spoon, folding, using tools, walking on a line, preparing small snacks, learning how to groom themselves, practising manners and gardening. These activities help a child practice hand eye coordination, motor skills and daily functions.

SENSORIAL: The Montessori Sensorial curriculum promotes the development and refinement of the five senses. The sensorial materials encourage children to classify, distinguish and improve their perceptions of size, shape, colour and texture.

MATHEMETICS: Children are able to discover math with a hands on approach. Montessori math materials are designed to represent all types of quantities and engage the children when they display an interest in counting as they can enumerate them. These concrete materials also allow children to easily visualize the basic operations of mathematics (addition, subtraction, etc). Children also participate in several different activities such as learning to rote count, trace sand paper numerals, writing numerals on chalkboard, etc.

LANGUAGE: Children are exposed to a plethora of literature as well as Montessori language materials that help them grow into readers and writers. Reading instruction is presented to the child as early as 2-1/2 or 3. Construction of words and writing with moveable alphabets is nearly always followed by reading. Students are introduced to reading phonetically and writing by utilizing the various Montessori materials specifically designed to assist them.

SCIENCE: Children learn about animals and plants. The child learns what plants and animals require, their life cycles, and how they are classified. Learning about plants and animals helps a child gain a sense of appreciation for all living things. Students make use of the various Montessori materials to explore the world of science such as, sink and float, magnetic and non-magnetic, botany and animal puzzles, etc. Bi-weekly science experiments are also done

GEOGRAPHY- Children gain an understanding of the world and the places and cultures not seen every day. Geography is very abstract so having activities such as land and water form trays, maps and continental puzzles engages children and makes learning about the world even more exciting!

In the infant program, the children partake in age appropriate activities related to each subject that facilitate the development of their cognitive, social-emotional, gross & fine motor and communication skills.

In addition to Montessori activities, children also engage in arts and crafts, explore the beauty of music through the use of introductory instruments, play with many fun toys in a large bright play room and participate in physical activity daily.

I recognize that every child is unique so all activities are based on your child's age, needs and interest.

The program runs all year round, Monday to Friday and operates from 6:00 AM - 6:30 PM.
