Hi my name is Francesca. I am a mother of two wonderful children (5 & 8). My daycare is Francesca’s Daycare, which I opened in 2008.
I have one full-time permanent position opening up in September 2012. I also have a morning position available for a 2 or 3 year old.
I do enjoy taking on babies, starting at 12 months of age. I prefer to work with families from an early age, so that I am able to create lasting, loving bonds with the children as they grow and develop.
I am CPR & First Aid certified for infants, children and adults. I have my Vulnerable Sector Screening police check. I also volunteer with children’s liturgy at Our Lady of the Lake Church.
I have a large warm brightly lit playroom in our renovated open basement. There are shelves of toys, books and games for children of all ages (boys & girls). I have activity centres throughout the space, which I rotate throughout the year. I gear these centres towards the children’s interests. Right now there are chalkboards, a make-up table, a baby centre, a building blocks centre, a reading area, a dress-up area and a crafts table.
I have a designated space for morning circle time. This learning area includes a monthly chart displaying the days of the week, themes, holidays, birthdays, etc. Alphabet and number charts are hung at eye level where children can easily reach them. I also keep supplies like my magnet board and crafs here.
I introduce a new theme to the children every week. It is an opportunity for me to sit down with them, read them a story and teach them new songs (or rediscover old favourites). I use games to teach them their letters, numbers, sizes, shapes, colours, etc. (activities depend on where they are developmentally) I set out individual crafts (I assist younger children while older children work independently) which children are able to practise their fine motor skills like colouring, cutting, gluing, etc.
Morning and afternoon snacks and lunch are provided in my sunny main floor kitchen. This space is gated, so young children can be closely monitored while I prepare lunch. The main floor is open and the stairs are gated, so older children can play here before lunch and afterwards during nap time.
We enjoy daily outdoor play.
The backyard has a large open space for running and playing. There is a swing set for older children to play, as well as a smaller structure for toddlers. There is a toy house, turtle sandbox, dolphin teeter totter, water table and a box full of toys. A deck with a pergola provides shade from the summer sun, where snacks and activities are set out in warmer weather.
I also supervise outdoor play in the front yard where children have access to tricycles, scooters, ride-in-cars, bicycles, toys and a kitchen set. Our corner lot gives the children a large stretch of sidewalk, uninterrupted by neighbouring driveways, to practise riding their preferred mode of transportation. The driveway and front porch are a great place for the children to discover their inner Picasso with their chalk drawings. The wrap-around porch is a favourite place to cool off with a late afternoon popsicle.
Our home is smoke-free. We have a child-friendly cat.
We take daily walks to school. Toddlers are sheltered from rain and snow in a covered stroller. We enjoy strolling in the rain with our umbrellas. We play at the park and visit the ducks and birds at the pond. We explore the neighbourhood, and toboggan down the hill at school. We are regulars at the local Early Years Centre. We attend Story Structures and Stay ‘N Play.
Discipline is a regular part of my day. I do find the techniques in the “1-2-3 Magic” book (a discipline book for parents) to be extremely helpful.
I do believe that communication between parents and caregivers is essential. I do ask parents of toddlers to send a notebook so I can let them know what their child has been eating and drinking; the number of wet/soiled diapers; naptime info; and special notes highlighting your child’s day. I keep parents of preschoolers in the loop about their child's daily activities/development during chats at drop off and pick up time.
I provide healthy child-friendly snacks and meals throughout the day. I encourage children to eat a balanced meal, with plenty of fruits and vegetables. I prefer if children drink water, instead of sugary drinks like koolaid and juice. I do have children with dairy and wheat sensitivities, so I am used to preparing meals with these dietary restrictions.
Daily Schedule:

7:45 a.m. - get ready to go to school
