I'm a former elementary and preschool teacher and am now enjoying staying home with my own little guys, 21/2 yrs and 9 mos. Most of my teaching experience was with kids ages 2 1/2 to 6 with the occasional recreational program for children aged 7 to 12. I taught for 7 years and have been running my home daycare for 2 years now.
My goal is to provide the children in my care with a safe place for them to learn, grow and have fun. I believe in running a child centered program so while I will provide a general routine to our days I will not prescribe themes or skills for the children to learn. Rather I will provide many opportunities for skill development and learning and support the children as they choose what they're interested in that day/week. For example, if a child is excited about dinosaurs I would look for books and activities so that we could learn more about them.
I run my daycare in the main floor, finished basement and backyard of my home. I live in a residential neighbourhood with lots of parks, playgroups and a library. We spend time outdoors each day and try to network with other caregivers and stay at home moms when we can. I also try to keep indoor play stimulating by changing toys regularly, engaging in sensory activities, singing, reading and creating artwork.
I recertified in child and infant CPR in Nov. 2011 with Red Cross.
Always ensure that your child receives quality care by taking the time to investigate the provider and by asking for references! We simply cannot verify the claims of every daycare provider.
