Does anyone know whether clay flower pots can be used in the oven? I found a cool craft on Pinterest where you bake muffins in a flower pot but I am scared to do it. What if the clay shatters?
Has anyone ever done this??

I hope you are using muffin liners and not just putting the dough into the clay pots, but I don't think they would shatter. But if you use a foil lined cookie sheet just to make sure they are contained it might ease your mind.

I have even cooked playdo in the oven that we cut into shapes for Christmas ornaments, but at a lower temp. Is this a Mother's Day idea? Let us know how it goes!

I'm pretty sure garlic and Brie bakers are clay so I'm pretty sure they can go in the oven

You can buy clay bakers but not sure if there is a special finish on them to prevent chemicals in the clay from passing to the food assuming there might be something in flowerpots that isn't in bakeware. I have seen recipes for making cupcakes in the pots too.

Another option would be to use a small pot that the cupcake liner will fit into putting crunched paper under to lift it up if necessary - then bake the cupcakes/muffins in regular tins as usual and pop in the prepared flowerpots after the fact.

Clay pots in the oven should be totally fine as long as it is heated up gradually, just to be safe. If put in from cold state to hot then they might shatter. I used to do ceramics so before they become pots, clay is first a soft dough-like substance and then it gets fired (baked) at a high temperature to make it permanent/hard. At way higher temperatures than what our ovens can do. I would suggest using plain ones, the terra cotta ones, or ones without any colored glaze or paint. Certain glazes can leach into food. I would bake the muffins in liners for sure. PLayfelt's suggestion is also good, to bake first then pop in prepared flowerpots afterwards.

I am another who would bake the muffin in the muffin liners and than add it to the clay pot afterward just to be safe both with the leaching of chemicals into the food AND the loosing your clay pot and ruining the food by having 'chard's' in it.

IME baking clay is always a risk even if it says it CAN be baked they slightest imperfection can cause it to shatter...I had many a ceramic clay project get sent to be fired only to have it returned in pieces on me :(

Yes i was thinking of it as a Mother's day gift.

They look so awesome on this website :

But I don't want to shatter the pots or poison anyone of there are traces of metal in the clay pots so I am not sure. maybe I will have to use a muffin tin and then transfer them after the fact I guess. I just hope they turn out well :)

Thanks everyone !!
