WHY? Do so many people "blame" the Day Care for the cause if illness in "their" home? I had a Mom tell me this morning, the reason her Husband just took his first "sick day" in seven years is because their daughter got him sick, and she got her first "day care illness". Isn't it possible they got sick from somewhere else? change of weather? grocery store? place of employment? etc. Why is it blamed on the day care and.....how do you know that? forensics?

Yeah...and who's kids are the ones bringing it INTO the daycare??? It just materialized in the cracks of the floor at daycare I suppose...the root of all illness.

Ewww. Ball pit. They always smell like pee. ;)
kidlove, just as an FYI, a change in weather doesn't make people sick - viruses do. Sorry, just a pet peeve of mine. :D

but alpha, change in weather can lower immune system, in turn making a body more susceptible to contract a virus, as does teething, and allergies. Anytime the immune system is compromised, the person is more likely to become ill.
One of my d/c kids parents were sick on the weekend with a throw up bug. On Monday they told me about their hellish weekend and then looked me dead in the eye and asked if I or any of the kids had had it. The nerve of the attitude! I answered truthfully no and then asked if they had been to the grocery store, mall, kids indoor play parks or pool recently in a very sweet, concerned voice. The look on their faces (yes, they do drop off together!) was priceless and it answered my question. I then let them know that dispite all the foot traffic in my home, it is cleaner than those places I mentioned because I am constantly wiping down surfaces and little hands. They then triend to figure out where else they could have caught it. I told them, unless it is a pox or eboli, I don't stress so much about where it came from, I just deal and continue.

Where did you learn this? In Pathophysiology and Microbiology,we were taught that this is a myth, and that no studies have been done that support this.
I actually called a Mom out on it once! She passive agressively, mentioned how her "daughter was sick again from daycare bugs, hahahaha <----insert fake laugh here" To which I replied, "actually there are no bugs floating around here and haven't for a few weeks, I'll be sure to keep a close eye on the kids in case they catch what she has"
HA!!!

my point exactly mimi, why does it matter WHERE it comes from, so you got sick....stay away and get well. Like blaming someone is going to make things better. I seriously can't stand some people. Hahahahaha

pathyfizzy what? ha I'm not a book learner (only one book for me) more common sense here, no disrespect just the way I believe and learn, you and I see eye to eye sometimes but "clash" many others......not a scientific person just natural healing and "common know how".....think about it alpha, if you stand in the cold after your body has acclimated to the warm, your body is shocked, add to it the improper attire that sooooo many parents send their kids out in beginning of fall and their body is in even more shock, the body works so hard to keep a proper temp and fight the muscle reaction and "stress" that has been put on it, and say they don't wash their hands before afternoon snack 20 minutes later. The bodies otherwise "high" immune system has just become compromised by the "shock" it has gone through and is still trying to recover that....and BAM here comes a little bug that could normally be fought and.... sickness! So many people say, "winter clothing doesn't effect whether or not you become ill" I disagree, considering that analogy.

lou, thats exactly what I said to this Mom today. "no one has been sick here, that's why I am stressing to you, if you have any other symptoms please let me know so you can pick your daughter up" geesh!

I sort of see both sides on this. My son has been in care and when he started all of a sudden he was getting sick more often. Our other habits hadn't changed, only now he was going to a daycare. However I didn't blame the daycare, I never thought she didn't keep a clean home or anything like that. I just understand that kids pick up bugs easily because they touch everything. In his first 5 or 6 months of daycare he had impetigo (although I think I know where he caught this and it had nothing to do with daycare), a very high fever, mollescum, pink eye, and several various colds. His first year of life he had a single cold. I defiently see a connection there and I'm sure that other parents notice the same thing but it's not daycare's fault. We can't put kids in a bubble for thier parents. We go to parks, and on outings, and come in to contact with other children with snotty noses... it happens.
As for parents blaming themselves getting sick on thier kids getting sick which they blamed on daycare... ok COME ON! Get over it. Illness happens, who cares where it came from no one can really know. And it's just plain rude to say this to a provider.
Oh yeah for sure, a child's first year in childcare is absolutely going to be his or her worst as far as catching viruses. It's all part of building their new immune systems! My daughter had so many, it was ridiculous!! But of course, I didn't blame the childcare that's just what happens when people get grouped together during cold and flu season! It's when parents strike a 'tone' about it, that annoys/amuses me, lol.

Yeah "striking a tone" about it would bother me quite a bit. Thankfully none of my parents have been like that so far. *knock on wood*. Everyone I have seems to have the mindset that "kids get sick.. it happens".

Ya, I have to agree with Alpha on this. Change of weather doesn't lower immune systems and I may have to debate the teething and allergy thing too.
But yes, we are to blame for EVERYTHING. From illness to behavior problems to sleeping at night. It's always our fault.

With all due respect, it's not common sense. It's science. There is no room for opinion. :) This is akin to me telling you that ghosts are real, and when you ask me to back up what I'm saying with some kind of proof, me telling you that it's just "common know how".
Anyway, yeah...parents blame us, and it's so satisfying to tell them that nobody here has been sick except their precious special snowflake. ;)

Just wait until their kid starts school. There are only 5 germ infested children in my home... there are 800 in the school they'll go to. LOL Best to build their immune systems now.

Colds are caused by a virus or bacteria, period. Flu is caused by a virus or bacteria, period. There is no opinion or argument, that's the scientific fact. Yes, if your immune system is lowered due to fatigue or a recent sickness you are more susceptible, but walking in the rain isn't going to hurt you unless someone sneezes in your face.
However, the original problem in this thread makes me mad too. I tell all my dcMoms to carry wipes in their purses and wipe their children's hands before getting out of the shopping cart or off the bus, but before putting their child in the carseat or home. Washing hands is the first line against germs and not touching your face. I remind them and remind them. I bet none of them do it.
