Well after months of talking about it and thinking over the pros and cons, this is my last day with my agency. I am going private as of Monday. I am scared, I will admit. Not sure why, I have been doing this for 11 years. It may have something to do with the horror stories/scare tactics put on me by the agency owner or what "could" happen. But all of my families have stayed on with me. I am happy about that. :D

I could use some wonderful words of encouragement!

The first sign that you are doing GREAT is that all your families have stayed!!! After 11yrs you can do this in your sleep....give yourself credit, most people can't do it after 5yrs!!

Congratulations on your 'freedom' and Good Luck!

Just be yourself. You've been doing this a long time and your families obviously love you. The one thing I'll say is be firm about payment and being paid on time. I'm guessing this is one thing the agency took care of for you, so it will be new? Just make sure that your clients understand that no payment means no care.

Congratulations. Advice for a veteran? Your families obviously love what you do (and you) so keep doing what you are doing and forge ahead with confidence. I agree with jazmic, it's tough to be tough but you have to with YOUR policies now and especially on time payments. All the best to you.

I started out with an agency and than went solely private ~ not much changed in the day to day running of the program .... except now you are responsible for billing and receiving with your clients so ensuring you have a clear contract and stand FIRM with payment practices!

Congratulations!

Congratulations! I wouldn't want to be with an agency because I like being self-employed and being my own boss. I worked for big companies all my life and I don't ever want to be in that situation again as long as I live. It's wonderful to choose who you work with and who you remove from your life and never have to deal with again. It gives you peace of mind to know that you can always choose how to make your life happy, to be in charge of your own contract and your policies and rules. Have a wonderful time with your changeover.

We don't have agencies here is Quebec. What exactly do they do? What does it change?

We don't have agencies here is Quebec. What exactly do they do? What does it change?

In Ontario "agencies" are the ones licensed under our Day Nusery Act to partner with the government to offer parents subsidized child care and this model is required to meet additional benchmarks that private daycare does not - aka stricter ratios and so forth ... so they advertise for clients and clients sign up with them and than the agency subcontracts providers to actually provide the service the client needs as a middleman ... they interview with the provider to ensure those home meets DNA requeirements and than they sign a contract for service and pay the provider x\day for every child placed with the provider through them providing services outlined in the contract - provider is still considered self employed within that contract obligation and can still choose to accept any client refered or tell the agency it's not working and is responsible for all their own book keeping for tax purposes ... but agency deals with collection of fees and terminations and so forth with clients.

There are some benefits to the model for those who hate dealing with collecting fees or client conflict the agency is there to mediate and deal with it ... this is also the only model option for clients who need government assistance with fees...as private businesses we cannot accept clients who need this service.
