Allergic reaction??

I have a dcb who showed up monday morning covered in hives/rash was informed by mom they were at emerg and it was allergic reaction to antibiotic that he was on for inner ear infection so accept him into to care all morning fussy not himself and by lunch has a fever so call send him home mom takes him to emerg as he was shaking abit slightly bluish lips dr said doesn't think its allergic reaction maybe fifth desease alright then get call later that night dcb woke from nap with 1 eye swelled shut and nails turned blackish so back to emerg is now on steroids and was sent home as they are not 100% sure what it is so today she sends my note to let me know he's feeling better and wants to send him tomorrow would you accept back into care or ask that he finish steroid treatment before returning at this point i don't beleive he has fever or anything that i can exclude as per my sickness policy

Until I know for sure what it is I would not risk my children, husband, the other daycare children or my own health I wuld not have him in care. What you don't know can KILL you when it comes down to unknown disease. I have a policy that stats:

Doctor's Notes
I hold the right to ask for a Doctor's Note before your child can return to care.
I also have the right to refuse a Doctor's Note, if I feel that your child is not ready to join in all activates or just isn't ready to return to care.
Sending your Child Home
I hold the right to send your child home upon arrival or during the day if at anytime I feel that your can not join in all activates, is uncomfortable, or any other reason I feel is justified.
this way if I am not comfortable with the medical problem, then I don't have to deal with it. I am not a Dr. or a nurse.

if it is just a reaction then as long as the child can join in all activates I would let them come, but for something that is unknown I personally would not be comfortable.

Child has been on medication for 48 hours. In the absence of other symptoms then he is probably ok. If he was going to have additional reactions it would have happened by now. The steroids will be making a difference. Long term I hope they are continuing some sort of followups to determine what happened. It does sound like a reaction that resulted in poor oxygen levels (the blue/blackness). Which is one reason for the steroids.

At the same time there are several conditions that can follow an ear infection/antibiotics and I would be concerned for everyone - and especially this close to Christmas as you do not want to put any of your own or daycare families in jeopardy this time of year because then it would spread to the wider community due to family gatherings.

You don't say the child's age but I am guessing not very old from the behaviours. If you think you can keep the child separated in a play yard area then that would help a bit. I probably would be looking for a minimum of 72 hours on medicine to be sure there is 3 days as that is about when a reaction to the new medicine will start or the old problem will flare up again.

eek... I might ask for a dr. note. I know that legally they don't have to provide one, but there's a lot going on there. And the fact that mom brought him the next day and he got worse is concerning. My son will get hives about twice a year and I keep him home from school until they're gone. That's just for my peice of mind! The fact that she sent him is concerning.

I would be hesitant to bring him back to so early with out a diagnosis. I'd maybe ask for them to keep him home or with family for the remainder of the week just to stay on the safe side. i'm sure she wouldn't want her kid in daycare with another child that was undiagnosed. His symptoms sound serious.

I think I would be nervous taking him since he's turning blue without knowing what the problem is....god forbid what if the child died in daycare? Fifths disease is a scaley rash on the torso and a red cheek ( like they've been slapped) along with a fever and possibly a sore throat. Shaking and turning blue doesn't sound like a walk in the park and I really have to question why the parent wants to send the kid to daycare?

Has a full 24hrs passed with no symptoms or issues? If not, I wouldn't take him back. I'd say something along the lines of "glad he's feeling better, but for the safety of the other kids, I won't be able to take him back until a full 24hrs has passed with no symptoms.'

Unfortunately, since he was already at daycare he has spread the germs already. The poor little guy, what a scare! And poor you, I would have been at my wits end in a case like that, you must have been really shaken by this! I'm glad he's on the mend. The other ladies gave really good advice.
