I have a 14 month old DCG that is a stripper at nap time...haha....she takes all of her socks and anything else she can manage to get off (fortunately not diaper as yet!). The problem is, I think she has also recently been pulling her earrings off during nap time (I just noticed one missing while changing her after nap time...I can't really be sure about if she had both on this morning) ...she's lost 1 each of 3 sets in the last 2 weeks....and I'll be darned if I can find them any where. Parents are totally frustrated as apparently the earrings are expensive. I have no knowledge whatsoever about babies and earrings (quite frankly, if it was my own child I wouldn't even hear of causing them unnecessary pain...and let them make the conscious decision of piercing when they are older...but none of my business with anyone's child but my own). My question is: Is there not some kind of child proof earring backing they should be using (I mean, isn't that some kind of choking hazard if she, by chance chose to just swallow it during nap time?).

I would maybe take the earrings off before nap, or ask the parents not to send her to daycare with earrings on if they don't want them lost. I wouldn't want to be held responsible for anything the child lost while here. Find earrings is damn near impossible.

I would ask that they either get locking sleepers ( I use to have a pair) or to take them out before they come. they are a coking hazard to all the children. It is my responsibility to keep all the children safe not to make sure they are "pretty".
Why would a parent put expensive earrings on a child, when they are just sending them to daycare. I understand if it was a special outing (dinner etc.), but daycare.

I just sent off an email to parents suggesting that they look into a special backing that would prevent her being able to pull them off...good to know they exist:)

How about a pair of sleepers ..... They are small hoops.

Often parents get their child's ears pierced when they are just a few months old and are left in for years! Some parents don't take the earrings out until the children are old enough to know the difference. Those earrings usually cost somewhere between $100 - $200. They usually are the ones where the backs can't be easily taken off by little ones but it probably depends on where they were purchased.

I agree with Littlefeet because I have a little girl who came to me at 10 months of age with her ears pierced and her Mom told me they didn't come out and they never did. I have another little girl starting this Feb. and she'll only be 10 months old and I better check into that, so thanks for this reminder. But if I were you I would ask the parents to put in the original earrings that don't come out. That's a choking hazard and I'd be frightened too, you have a right to ask that this problem be addressed quickly by the parents.
