View Full Version : Do you wake them up from nap...

Or let the kids wake on their own - especially the older ones? I have a 3y/o that I have to wake up on the odd day that he actually sleeps because he has an early p/u time. I have a new 4y/o who has only slept twice before and I've woken him up both times when the other kids got up. I'm worried his nap will interfere with him going to bed at home. Would you wake him up or let him wake up on his own?

I only wake them up if they are still sleeping at start of afternoon 'snack time' ... prior to that at the end of 'two hour quiet time' the sleep time music is turned off and changed to 'wake up music', the curtains opened and the awake children are allowed to return to their normal voice levels and more active activities on the main floor ~ IMO if a child is still sleeping through all that activity they must still NEED it so I let them go until it impedes of the 'routine of the group' at which time than I will go in and help them with a little prompting.

Some I have to wake either from too long a nap or due to lack of sleeping well at night (per parents request), just depends on the kid. I have one who would sleep for like 5 hours if I let her and have had parents ask me to shorten naps due to lack of will during bedtime. :) I don't mind, the only thing I won't do is keep a child from sleeping at all, or allow a child to make noise and distrupt the others.

I will leave kids sleep that have late pick up times, the early ones I like to have have up, diapers changed and snack started. I won't keep kids up though.

No, I don't like to wake the children. I think they should sleep as long as they need and wake naturally. My little ones all sleep at least 2 hours in the same room and the new baby who wears cloth diapers wakes up as soon as he poops, between 1-2 hours every day so he's in the other room. I have one child picked up at 3:30 every day so I get them in bed by 12:30 so they are awake by 3ish for potty/diapers & snack. Sometimes if they sleep a long time I'll wake the early pickup child only and let the others sleep.

My my little ones I wake them up from morning nap after 30-45min becuase I want them to have a better afternoon nap. It's just enough to 'hold them off'. Everyone goes down after lunch and I wake them up (if they don't on their own) at 3:00 because we have a bus pickup to do by 3:20. Otherwise I'd let them sleep until 3:30-3:45.

Oh good point Mamma_Mia ... morning naps either occur before 9am here if needed OR they are taking on the fly either in the stroller or carseat ... I have one who has a cat nap every morning en route to playgroup!

Morning nap; yes, I will wake them. Otherwise some would happily sleep through lunch, etc and then not nap in the afternoon.
Afternoon nap depends on the kiddo, and our current schedule. If I know that they were put to bed a little late the night before, or got up extra early, they can nap a little longer. I will wake up the 2.5+ year olds, because I think 2-2.5 hours is a good nap for them. Any longer and it can start to interfere with bedtime. But the littlest ones have been known to take 3 hours or so. And those days are GREAT! ;)

No I dont wake children. As far as Im concerned, they are sleeping because their body is in need of the rest.

I do for the a.m. nap just so they get some rest and can be reasonable for lunch.:) I wake up my crew around 3:00 for diaper change, snack and outdoor play. If we can't go outside I may let them sleep another 20 mins. Most though are awake by 3:00 and are quietly waiting to get up.

I have to wake them up some days, as I have a school run. This, however, is my last week of doing said school run, and I am ECSTATIC!! :D

I usually won't wake up unless it's an incredibly long nap, say, over 3 hours.

All morning nappers must be up no later than 10:30 and in the afternoon I wake them at 3:15 so we can do diapers and get snack done before hometime starts and because it is outside time for everyone. They would have had just over 2 hours of naptime by then.

Yes ~ this is one of the many reasons why I decided not to do 'before and after school' care cause I do not want to have to wake a sleeping child on a regular basis :(

Congratulations on being done with that shortly!

I let them sleep! On top of that, if they wake up early I let them stay there for at least 15 min so they learn to have quiet time.

I have 2 on the main floor that are up after 2.5 hours then another 2 upstairs that will often sleep until 3.

I never wake them up unless I need to get them ready for an early pick up.

I do the same. I have to get my son on and off the bus, so I start waking everyone at 3:00 so we can do bum changes and potty and get our outside gear on.
