So one of my dck is being picked up by a grandparent that I've never met before. I've been given a name, that is all. My policy is to ask for I.D. when it's a new person picking up.
The first time I ever had to ask someone to show I.D. they looked at me like I was an alien. I really honestly figured they would be comforted by the fact that I wouldn't release their precious little person without being careful!

I think it's a good idea!

Not only did I ask for ID, but the first time I also photocopy the ID and put it in the clients file.
I tell this to the families during the interview. If who ever shows up and refuses to show me their ID then they can not leave with the child.

Same policy here too. If we haven't met, I need ID to release the child. Safety first :)

How old is the child ??? I do have that in my policy as well, even if its grandparents and I do mention to parents to warn them not to be taken aback about it, its just for the safety of their children and they totally agree.
Although, when it happen to me, twice, both kids were 3 years old going on 4. It was kidda clear who they were and the kids ran to Grandma all happy !! So yes its a weird situation to be in. In my case, it was very obvious so .... I didnt ask for I.D.
I had one 1 y.o. who's grandma came to get her and she was sure she wanted to go to her but I had met the grandmother with dad in the morning !
I do have a 9 month old and if Grandma would show up, I will ask for I.D. then !
Its not a comfy situation but... its safety ! And Grandparents are not very tactful with us, they are very direct and not shy to tell the truth in your face right :o

I ask for ID too and when the parent informs me that someone else will be picking up I tell them then to make sure the person brings their ID in with them That way they are prepared ahead of time and there is no embarrassment

I always let the client know ahead of time as well. I may make a joke about it to the grandparent when they pick up. "Did your daughter let you know that I need to see ID? I just want to make sure you're not a nana impersonator LOL " They often just laugh and hand it to me.

I have this policy outlined in my handbook, and I go over it with the parents as well. They are, or should be, well aware that I ask for Id.
I also try to lighten it up a bit by joking, I find people tend to take it less personally if your pleasant about it.

If that is your policy; stick to it! I don't ask for ID, BUT the person picking up must be listed in our contract as a designated pick-up person. If the child is old enough, I would also ask them "Do you know this person?"
It seems silly, but aren't we better safe than sorry? I would HATE if I released the kiddo to someone I wasn't supposed to!!!
Oh, and if it was an emergency situation and the person who was picking up was NOT on my approved list; I would absolutely ask for ID.

Definitely stick to your policy. I have a similar one in my contract but I'm fine if the parents show me a picture on a cell phone of the family member so I can recognize them when they arrive to pick up the child.

this is my policy, often I tell parents if they can text or email me a photo it makes it easier. I had this situation today my one little boy had to be picked up by the grandma I did not know. However she was driving dad's car so that was ID for me and she offered to show ID. Mom and I had this arranged in advance so we were set.
