A insurance company (Intact) through a broker is telling me that they can insurance 5 kids (but that includes my own son). This is the best I have found. Does anyone knows a company that can insurance 5 plus my own? or is this the best I will be able to find?

Yes, my home insurance covers 5 Daycare Kids. This does not include my own children. My insurance company is Wawanesa. Hope that helps. My broker had her homework cut out for her whilst looking for someone to insure my house and daycare. I had to leave my previous insurance co. cause they would only insure me for 3 daycare kids.

I found the same thing. People on here gave me the names of their companies but no one would insure me for 5 plus my 2. TD melache mannex will do 6 total so that will work for you with your son

Thank you I will check with these companies. How much are you paying per year for the daycare insurance?

I am with TD Meloche Monnex too and have 5 unrelated and 2 of my own children and they insured me. It was about $200 for the year for me :-) It is also a tax business write off:D

But would you need to have insurance for your own children? Maybe a stupid question but who is going to sue themselves? I am going to have to re-check as I told them 5 daycare kids plus my own two and they said all was good........maybe time to call them up just to be sure :-)

It's not about suing ourselves but about the perceived best practice in the field set by the regulated field in certain jurastictions combined with insurance statistical analysis thag the more children in attendance the more perceived "risk" for the insurer having to pay out due to an accident/injury occurring ... so insurance companies choose how many children can be attendance on the policy and it varies by where the carriers home base is cause across Canada the rules are so different - regardless if they are your own so to speak!

I would definitely ensure that your Ryder clearly states in writing 5 children PLUS providers own verses just relying on a verbal your fine ... I know providers who thougf they had coverage and than found out they did not ... if you need to make a claim they WILL look for reasons not to pay out and if the policy states coverage for 5 children with no mention of your own and any incident report from EMS states 6 or more kids that can make them have cause to say your policy was void due to more than 5 kids being present ... there is clear evidence in media and people you talk to who that the industry is built on deny deny deny :( Best defence is an iron clad clearly written policy!!!

I am now with Gore Insurance as they will cover 5 plus my own. Was with Intact but because of their policy (5 including your own), I asked my broker to look around and find a company that will cover 5 dck plus my own 2.

I had started a thread some time ago with the same question, check it out under managing a daycare, title Home Insurance - Ottawa Area.
Good luck :)

That`s weird...we were with TD Meloche Mennox until I opened my daycare, but they would not insure us for daycare. They said the insurance only covered things like parents slipping and falling on the walkway etc., not something happening to one of the kids in my care. Make sure you ask exactly what is covered by your insurance! I switched to Wawanesa and they cover 5 daycare kids plus my own. It costs more than TD, but no choice.

You lucked out, when I called TD Meloche Monnex in January with pretty much the exact scenario I was told that it would fall under commercial insurance and they were not in a position to offer it to me. We ended up switching to the Co-Operators. When did you get your insurance with them, I find it strange that they said "no" to me.

I'm with Wawanesa and we have a pool. The daycare children are not allowed in the pool area, however. The play area is a separate area.

we called wawnessa (thanks to you guys) and they quoted me even less than what I have now and they insured me for the daycare kids and 2million liability.

Again I just caution you to please ask them what is exactly covered with this insurance. They said yes to me too...but when I asked what exactly was covered, they said it is basically for things like parents slipping and falling on the walkway...NOT something happening to a child while in my care even if it is not my fault. This is not the kind of coverage I need...so I had to switch and believe me, we are paying way more all around for insurance and it hurts...so I would have stayed with TD if it seemed viable. Just be careful to know what you are covered for exactly.

ok now here's an important question. Is your daycare a legal and registered business, or are you doing it private? I was told by TD and Allstate that if you are private and don't have a legal and registered business, then you should be fine with your home insurance, just to up the liability for about 130-150 dollars. If you are a legal business, then you need commercial liability insurance, and they told me it ranged from like 700-1000 dollars. Fine if you make a ton of money, but i don't, i barely made 9 grand last year but In my honest opinion, i would pay it because i feel it's better to be safe than sorry.

who do you have yours with? I was told when I signed on that I had full liability. I will call them today to double check that nothing has changed.

Well private daycares are "legal" businesses, so that doesn't even make sense. None of the companies I talked to said anything about whether or not I had a registered business name.

Gore won't cover autos in Toronto. Their home quote with daycare ryder was very high (4x's what I am now), same with Wawnessa. Still looking.

My Td Meloche Monnex covers me because I always only have 6 at any given time. One of my clients is a teacher and my oldest son goes to school (he leaves on the bus at 7:50 and DCB comes at 8:15 and my son gets home at 3:55 after DCB gets picked up at 3:45) He is not here in the summer or March Break or Christmas break or PD days when my son is here. Even though I have 5 registered kids plus two of my own I always only have a max of 6 at any given time. I told them this but didn't realize they had a max because they said all was good to me!
If I ever lose Teachers son I guess I will have to shop around!
I have been meaning to write you torontokids. Sorry it has taken me so long.
