Anyone know of a brand of fan that makes a nice loud whirring noise (white noise for naptime)? I have been using a great one for the past year and the kids have all been sleeping really well (2 -2.5 hours every afternoon). Yesterday I pulled it out and it is broken :( Now the kids are all waking up way earlier...like after 1.5 hours! I think it has to be the absence of the fan and I NEED a new one! But many fans are made to be as quiet as possible and that doesn't help me...I need a noisy one! Anyone know of any???

Why not just get a noise machine? I have a few and they are the best! They prob take less room than a fan too.

I bought one of those from Babies R Us awhile back, but I returned it as I found it didn't make a loud enough noise compared to the fan. It might work if I had one beside each child...but I wanted one machine that could cover the whole basement....
I use humidifiers....but with no water. And it double as a humidifier when you actually need it!

Can you run a humidifier with no water??? I would have thought it would shut off if empty...isn't it a fire hazard like that? Thinking about this reminds me that I need a DEhumidifier as my daycare is in the basement...I wonder if they are noisy enough to do the trick and kill two birds with one stone ;) Thanks for posting this as it gives me the push I need to buy one! I need my naptime back!

I use white noise from a CD and click on the repeat button and goes on and on and on until everybody is up. Love it
depends on the humidifier, but this one doesn't go off and essentially it's the fan making the noise.
I also have a dehumidifier in my basement and it's quite noisy, but does go on and off so is more disruptive than anything...again, I'm sure it depends on the type...

Don't buy the ones meant for babies and kids, they are not loud enough. I have one that is meant more for adults, got it from wal mart and it works great.

I use a radio and turn it between stations best white noise I have ever used. Fans etc... too much of a fire hazard for me.

I have three Honeywell air purifiers, they are awesome for white noise! Got them all off Kijiji for way cheaper than in store, and they keep the dog/cat hair under control in the house too. http://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-Pure-Round-Purifier-50150-N/dp/B00008OOX2/ref=pd_sim_hg_3
I think I only paid $40 each for them. I put one in each bedroom and one in the hallway.

The dehumidifier will make enough noise but you will have to either set it on a lower setting to run all the time or it will keep shutting off as it reaches the humidity set.
For a noisy fan try something like value village or swap type store to get an older fan since yes the new ones are made to be less noisy but the older ones aren't.
I do second the radio between stations. A couple of those well placed would work.

Thanks everyone! Lots of great ideas! My hubby was able to get the old fan working again, so for now I am back in business..LOL. PLus we spent the whole morning outside today so I am hopeful today's naptime should be a bit more restful ;) I will keep all these ideas for when the fan truly dies though :)

I had a fan once that started to smoke from being over heated, don't take the risk. Kids can get out of there beds and try and stick things into them etc... I have some very inquisitive kids are that I just wouldn't trust. My radio is behind a very heavy chair so the kids can't get to the outlet.
