Odd huh? Or is it just me.

Or is it just me. I just got an email from a man looking for care for his 2 boys. Thing is that he says he is moving to town and wants to establish a daycare ahead of time so he can focus on starting his own business when he gets here. He asked a few questions regarding rates, hours etc, gave me the name of the children and their ages. Um, first of all why didn't he find his answers on my website if he found my contact via the internet? Who would want to register their children at a daycare they haven't visited yet? I understand being new to an area and moving from far away but wouldn't you want to establish a communication or phone interview at least? Should I respond just to see what happens? Now, from the email it sounds like english isn't a first language so maybe there's something I'm missing between the lines. Just want some input because my alarm bells went off. (Can't ignore those it OUR business!!!)

Yep, it's a scam. I had one similar a few years back and researched this scam online. They'll act like they want to commit right away, though they're not here. Will ask you to purchase specific things for the kids, for which of course they'll send you a cheque. They'll send a cheque for too much, you put it in your account, buy the stuff, send cheque for the remainder, then their cheque bounces. That's my understanding of it. Mine wasn't exactly the same, but similar. Ages and names of children changed from email to email. Just disregard.

jammiesandtea

Do you think I should change my email and daycarebear passwords?

No, our email accounts have not been compromised. The scam artists merely fished our email addresses from our daycarebear listings which contain them. They do not have control of your email or daycarebear account. The scam is they try to convince you to accept their child sight unseen for a future date, as they are "out of the country" and will be visiting soon. Then they want to send you payment ahead of time, but in a way that turns out to be phony, plus they send you too much, and they want you to send them the difference, which put YOU out the money when it eventually bounces. Or something similar. It's a scam that's been around for awhile.

I got it too!! I have gotten weird emails like this before. Whenever anyone emails me in regards to space in my daycare, I always ask them to provide me with a telephone # so I can call them and speak in person about what their needs are and what I can offer them. If they are really interested, they will provide # and then we chat over the phone. I don't give out my address anyway unless I speak to an actual person.

So, I replied with my phone number and asked her to contact me this is the reply I received this morning

Thanks for your quick response. We are Canadians working and living in Mexico for the past 3 years, it's time to relocate back to Canada in 2 weeks, i would have loved to call you but our work timing will not allow me to and i will need a calling card to do so, that why i chose emailing for proper registration process ahead our arrival.

Your charges is very affordable to us and it's perfectly okay with our budget as planned, but before we go ahead, the safety our our children matter most to us.

If you don't mind, we will like to know about you and your Daycare? What should be our expectation on our children while attending your Daycare? What about food, will you be the one providing their food or they should always come with their food? You may also supply any additional information as well.

Your quick response will be appreciated. I will get back to you with all the necessary information you need to know about our children to continue the registration process and i will send you our recent family picture as well.

Just so you are all aware, !

Here's the thing.

I don't take on clients that I can't meet first. For that reason alone I would not send any information to an email like this.

I would always insist that the client send a phone number to me to continue the process. I give out only information that is on my website anyways.

Hello! Has anyone ever been contacted by someone claiming they are interested in daycare who seemed like they were running a scam? I was recently contacted by someone who claims they need daycare right a way and is currently in Mexico. They want to get the registration process done before they relocate. The grammar is off, and I get a weird feeling from the message. They haven't asked for references or anything and seem keen to enrol. I have heard of scams where people send a cheque for a substantial amount, more than required and then ask you to send the difference to them. Anyone had this happen to them? Any advice?

Greetings,

My name is Cantin Moore. I just searched for your contact on internet, when searching for a daycare in your area for our two little boys. We are relocating to your area and we need a daycare to register our little boys as soon as possible ahead of our arrival in your area. Their names and age are Konbri 2 years and Harry 3 years 10 months old.

I will like to know if you have open space to registers our boys because we want to register our boys with you now before our arrival, so we can focus on setting up our business without any waste of time on searching for daycare once we get over there.

We will like to always drop our children at your daycare Monday to Friday every morning by 10 AM to 3 PM or 4 PM. Also i will like to know how much money do you charges per week, day or hourly, please explain?

Please get back to me on time if you have open for our 2 boys and let me know your fees as well, so we can continue on their registration process with you.

I will be waiting for your quick response.

Hi i just wanted to thank all of you for your posts. I have received the same e-mail and responses. I also have received a fishy inquiry from an Ashley Wayne that is based along the same lines as the one from Cantin Moore. Is there somewhere where we can report them for these messages that are a scam? As a daycare provider I find this kind of behavior very discouraging and hope that there is something we can do to prevent anyone from being taken in by it.

Ugh!! I also received the same email, I thought it was suspicious but to be honest I was a little excited because I am just starting out so adding more to my group is my goal. The correspondence always seemed a bit off. I am so happy I decided to join the forum today to see what everyone's thoughts were. The scammers asked if they could have my address and send two week deposit. This finally confirmed my initial spidey sense that this wasn't legit. I didn't ask for a deposit and my address is on my correspondence. I will mark the email as spam. I wonder if police should be notified or the news?? So happy I found this forum! Thank you for all the response!

I am not knowledgeable on scams but I would assume because he(most likely it's a group actually) is emailing ladies from different provinces that he is nowhere near any of you. It is a money scam and he most likely doesn't even live in Canada.

If you are truly scared and want to feel more assured, give your local police a call and explain the situation to them. They will be better to talk to and can answer some of your questions. They will probably want to know about the scam too

Cantin Moore <cantinmoore@icloud.c om>SCAM!!!

Hi,

Happy to hear that the deposit is not important at this time, but i want you to please see it from my own view as well that: I will not be coming with my wife and kids, it's very important to put everything in proper order for them ahead of their arrival over there. Also she won't be able to take more than $2,000 in cash with her to Canada which will be what they will be surviving on till i arrive because we presently have no Canadian account and my staying back like i said is to put thing in order according to our financial importance. I have to terminate our credit lines and all order attachment with our banks here in order to have our funds transferred to our Canadian account, this is part of the reason why am staying back.

And i'm also in fear that things can change when you are making arrangement like this without using deposit to make it a concrete arrangement that the space will not be given to another family, I must tell you that i contacted about 4 different daycare before i got your contact for my children, but they are all full and telling me they won't have anymore space until 6 months time or 9 months time, I won't want anything to change at all, because i believe this is a very hard time to get hold of any daycare or home daycare. that's why the deposit is more than important at this time because it's like a luck to have you.

This all process is to have everything ready for my family, so my absent won't affect them financially and generally till i arrive. Please send me your name and address to mail the deposit to you on time, so i can be sure that everything will be intact as conclude.

You will receive deposit within 2 to 3 business day. Waiting to hear from you soon.

With a scam like this, the goal is usually to send you a cheque, but it's for more than is required. So then they ask you to deposit it and withdraw the difference to send back to them. By the time you discover that the cheque has bounced, they have already got your money and they are gone. Unfortunately, there is not a whole lot police can do about these types of scams because it is so hard to trace to the criminals. They are usually overseas in places like Nigeria and use cyber cafes to send out their scams. If anyone wants to read a really great book about this whole thing, read "419". It is fiction, but is based on the reality of internet scammers in Nigeria. It is fascinating and gripping from start to finish. I doubt anybody needs to panic about giving your address at this point, but if you do receive a cheque, take it to the police and under no circumstances should you cash it!!!

Hi!

I have now contacted the police who directed me to the Canadian office that deals with cases of fraud. At 10am Friday morning when I made my report, the person who was taking my statement said that this was the second reported case, with the exact same details, that was reported to her that day. The common link between me & the other Day Care Provider was that we both advertised on this site.

I'll give a quick description of the attempted fraud. A person named Cantin Moore contacted me via email to register her two boys in my Day Care. She said that they were Canadians who lived in Mexico for the last 3 years and were moving back within the next 2 weeks. I replied giving my telephone number. They had a funny way around how they didn't want to call, just to move forward with their children's registration process. Their English was poor. Yes, the situation was odd. They asked questions about expectations, food, and daily rate. I answered these questions and then they sent me a family photo. Everything was weird. My alarm bells went off when they said that they wanted my name and address to send me a cheque for 2 weeks worth of care, although I previously said that a $100 deposit would be fine.
This is when I wanted to talk to someone about this situation. The Fraud Centre gave me a few scenarios of how these people would proceed from here to get money from me. One way is by sending too much money to me and then saying to just cash the cheque and send back the amount that I do not require. Well, whatever someone sends them, would be unrecoverable. Also, the cheques they send are usually stolen and falsified.
I just wanted to put this out there so that no DC Providers would fall prey to them.

I have also been receiving communications from this person. The last reply I sent was that if they contacted me again I would involve police. I received another email this morning

"Greetings,

So sorry for not getting back to you on time, we've been so busy with our relocation. I was contacted by my associate (Mariya Anderson) that the deposit payment has been mailed to you since 2 days ago, you should receive it before ending of this week or early next week.

Please confirm you receive this message and you're waiting for the payment, also let me know the moment you receive the payment, to be sure things are going as planned.

Important: I'm very sorry to inform you that we went to buy our flight tickets yesterday for my wife and kids but the earliest seats we got was January 6th. i know you won't be happy hearing this but we're as sad as you can be for not been able to make it over there on time as planned, but the most important is we got the tickets yesterday and 6th of January is intact.

Thanks "

I received the same emails and gave my mailing information. I feel like a boob!
I was not asked for any help providing for his family (Andrea (wife), Konbri (2) and Harry(3 yrs 10 months))
I had the feeling it was very odd, but didn't want to disregard just in case. Asked them to call me, Got the reply of the issue with the phone card and calling times. I asked several questions, including for them to solidify a meeting date to sign contracts and these were all avoided. I saw it as an oversight by a desperately time pressed family.

How do we stop this??? Obviously the email he got was from here as my other listing has only my phone number. I looked at my listing and would like to know IF I make my email private/unavailable, can interested families still contact me?

I wish I had taken the time to google this guys name as THAT is how I found out about this scam this morning (while awaiting a deposit that was due to arrive yesterday despite my being insistent none was required until the contracts were signed)

If I can help anyone with information I may have, please contact me and I am happy to help out!

Ok everyone so i got talked into this scam :(
but was lucky that i didn't lose any money over this. But ya this person has detailed information of my childcare center. I am taking this to media. I have contacted the RCMP, and reported crime control. Also the province, going to email the beat 94.5, 103.5 qm fm, and Facebook. This person send me a picture of a family of four. I have it all saved and will be exposed everywhere soon.
this is sad that technology is supposed to help us and not discourage with all this stupidity.

The email you received is most probably a scam. We advise you not to do any business with the authors, nor save a space for their child. You will most likely never hear from them again.

Unfortunately, we already tried to notify the authorities about similar emails in the past. We were told that, since the scammers were outside of the country, it would be hard to prosecute them...

It is always a challenge to balance information accessibility and information protection. We already have a big red warning inside all the accounts of our member's, in the listings management page.

As always on the Internet, we advise you to be cautious, especially when dealing with persons from outside the country and/or persons asking you to cash checks, money orders or similar items. Please stay safe. The Internet is a powerful tool to find new clients but you still have to use common sense and ONLY deal with persons from your neighborhood/city!

Just got the same thing in Calgary! Sent me a cheque for $2880; a ridiculous sum considering my small deposit! Was curious if it would clear or not, now I won't hold my breath. Thx!

Whatever you do - do not return any of the money to them. That is how the scam works. They give you too much and ask the difference be returned and by that time cheque bounces and you have sent your money to them. Let them know they can have the difference when they arrive for care. Even if the cheque appears to cash now pretend it is not in your account as it will most likely be removed nsf or cancelled by sender soon enough. This scam has been around for many years.

I got all the same emails everyone has previously posted, word for word, and fell for it. But the difference is that they sent me a cheque for less than I asked.

I know the posts are very old now,but found this post and had the same experience as you and thus had to reply:)

Greetings,

My name is Mr Moory and my wife name is Becky. I got your contact information through my search for daycare on internet for our Son. We are relocating to your area and we need a daycare to register our little boys as soon as possible ahead of our arrival in your area. Name of our son is: (Timothy 3 years 1 month old ).

I will like to know if you have open space to register our son because we want to register our son with you now before our arrival, so we can focus on setting up our business without any waste of time on searching for daycare once we get over there.

We will like to always drop our son at your daycare Monday to Friday every morning by 10 AM to 3 PM or 4 PM. Also i will like to know how much money do you charges per day?

Please get back to me on time if you have open for our son and let me know your fees as well, so we can continue on his registration process with you.

I will be waiting for your quick response.

Thanks

I got it too....the scams are pretty easy to spot (the Cantin Moore one). Actually, I just got it recently...a couple weeks ago while I was still on vacation, so it's been circulating for a while. If someone wants to sign up without even seeing you or your set up, forget it. I know there's the odd, genuine international inquiry. For the most part though, I think it's typically a scam.

Thankfully I came across this thread. This scam is still making it's rounds. I almost fell for it, too. He is now signing his name as Pinet Nider, his wife is Rebeca and his sons are Brochu and Wayne.
