Ok ladies. After my roller-coaster of a ride in the last couple of years I'm ready to start getting in shape and healthy, losing my 'extra' weight. I’ve done it twice before (with my 2 first kids) but I had a lot more time on my hands than now. I had a gym at work so would go during lunch. Since I've had my third, and opening the daycare, I find it hard (almost impossible) to fit in working out.

I'm reaching out to those that have 3 kids, a daycare and finds the time to fit this in their schedule. When do you have time?

My days start at 6am and I don't stop till 8pm when all my kids are finally in bed. I do my laundry at night during the week so that I have my weekends with the family.

I'm starting a workout this morning, will try to do it Saturday and Sunday morning before my day starts but I'd like to workout at least 4-5 times a week to see results. Yesterday was the first nice day out in a while so I took an hour walk with the kids. But then they fell asleep and had a really hard time napping in the afternoon so not sure that will work!

Do your workout during afternoon nap time .... I never put kids in a stroller for that reason .... I want them to run around and be really tired at nap time.

I've only done this a few times....I'm terrible at working out LOL...but I will go on the treadmill during their nap.

I do as much chores during the day so that I have my evenings free - laundry, dishes, everything. My husband and I tag team getting things cleaned up in the early evening, he gives the girls baths and gets them ready for bed while I clean up the kitchen and get ready for the next day. I bought a treadmill on final clearance and go on it in the evenings or in the morning on the weekends. I also try to be active with the kids during the day, once this horrible snow is gone we will be able to do much more.

If you need to do laundry in the evenings, do working out in between loads.

YouTube has all sorts of free workout videos and Zumba videos too.

It is impossible for me to go to a gym, so this as worked for me.

I think in terms of the guilt we feel for not working out in addition to working and taking care of our families, we should think about what we can do instead of what we envision to be the perfect picture of a mom working out at the gym.
I recently read that doing a 10 minute work out a few times a day (get your heart rate up) is just as beneficial as doing that 30 work out. So if we go up and down the stairs for 5 minutes and then do squats or jump rope for the other 5 wouldn't that be fairly easy to fit a few times into our day? We could even do some of these exercises while watching the kids play.
I beat myself up for the longest time for not being like that mom on tv that did it all and then went to the gym and didn't, like me, collapse on the couch in the early evening. I realized after I wore one of those step counters that I was putting in easy 5 to 7 thousand steps a day just walking and working around my house and being out with the kids. I was an active person and just needed to incorporate some heart healthy exercises into my day and have found it pretty easy to do.

I have an elliptical trainer on the other side of the gated area in the basement playroom so on days they are playing nicely during freeplay I can use it a bit. Although it tends to be in 5 minute spurts till someone needs me at least it is something. Have not done it hardly at all this winter because we have used the upstairs playroom more due to the chill, potty training and a new baby starting that does two naps. Hopefully in the spring will be able to get back down and using it more.

You should try high intensity interval training. You burn as many calories in about 25 minutes as you would being on the treadmill for an hour, if not more. I would make sure all your daycare kids are on the same sleep routine for afternoon nap if they arent already. If any of your own kids are home and don't nap then set some ground rules, and a set time that they can watch a movie or a 30-60minute time period of TV shows and then hit the treadmill, or put your exercise DVD on. You can get incredible interval training videos on youtube so it won't cost you anything and you will be done for the day in about 30 minutes. I see no reason why you should have to do exercise early in the morning or late at night if you have all your kids, or get all your kids on a regular schedule. Even if they don't nap for more than an hour or so, exercising is something that you obviously aren't going to be able to do with kids hanging around you, but putting a load of laundry on or doing the dishes and sweeping floors is something that can be done as you go along even with kiddos up, in smaller increments too or big cleaning tasks will only be once or twice a week whereas obviously 5 minutes of exercise will not do anything for you.

I suggest trying the Tony Horton 10 minute trainer. I lost a bit doing so and you have your choice of 10, 20 or 30 minute workouts daily. Regardless, you WILL be sweating. I also suggest following (or trying) their meal plan. Also, after my second, I went on a modified water cleansing diet (and yes, I was running a daycare then). It really helped me shed the pounds (and they never came back) and clear my body of the toxins. Yes you will be drained the first couple of days, so I suggest starting on a Friday, but you get used to it. But beware, the daycare lunches will look insanely more delicious.

If you want more info on the cleanse that I used, let me know!

I do hot yoga once a week (usually... But not this week ha ha). I'll go to the 7:45 or 8:00 class and do any running around beforehand. It's lovely to escape the after dinner cleanup and bath/bed for the kids sometimes!

Though, to be honest, Its not enough to lose weight. It's probably a good maintenance plan. If only I could kick my m&ms habit. I'd be set!

My problem with exercising during the daycare day is that if it gets too intense which is great it means I really want a shower when I am done and well that just isn't possible. Even if they are all sleeping in theory not safe as it is akin to simply leaving the house - besides kids sleep in my bedroom.

Thanks everyone ;) i started this weekend and i feel great already. I'll try during nap time this week and see if that works. I started with cardio workout DVD and my husband took my elliptical out from storage. I think I will alternate between the two.

If anyone else is in the same boat we could always encourage each other. DCP workouts...lol

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend! :)

I tried to post yesterday and it didn't go through... I was going to say the same thing as playfelt- I have ample time to exercise during nap but I can't really shower after. I was thinking to try sitting on the front step to cool off, or even use my blow dryer on the cool setting, and just dry my face and hair off and change my clothes... then shower after the kids go home.

On the plus side, it REALLY warmed up over here this weekend so I think I'll attempt walking to the school to pick up my daughter this week. That way nap is already over and the kids won't be tired enough to fall asleep in the stroller. If I go early, they can play in the field while we wait for school to get out also.

I'm all for a thread discussing fitness :) I have a bridesmaids dress I want to look decent in come August

I have no kids at home and really have to keep the pace up to clean the house and get supper ready and eaten before 8:00. I try to work out on my not so busy nights after dinner which is sometimes difficult with a full tummy but it's really the only time I have available. But I think Mimi's idea of doing some sort of heart pumping activity. I've also heard that it's more beneficial to do spurts of heart pumping activity which I could manage. I'm going to see how that works out tomorrow.

I have 2 children and started working out after they went to bed. At first it was really hard to get started. My husband was in the Navy and gone away more then he was home and I had to do everything by myself. At the end of the day I was tired and all I wanted to do was sit down and enjoy the quite. I had to force myself of the couch, now I look forward to it. It has become a stress relief for me. Once you figure out a plan that works for you it becomes a part of your everyday routine.

For me, I do my workouts as soon as I put my son down to bed at night at 8:00 or my husband puts him to bed and I go downstairs to start my workout at 7:30. For some people they have a hard time working out at night because it keeps them awake but it doesn't really affect me. I wish I could do it in the mornings to start my day off and then it would be done however I have never been a morning person and honestly I don't think I ever will be :(

If you do workout at night just be careful because it's easy to get lazy once the dinner mess is cleaned up to flop on the couch and not want to move after. I go weather I feel like it or not and when I am having the mental argument in my head that I don't want to work out because I'm tired even though I know that I should. I just go because I know it's the right thing to do. Plus, I know that I will feel better afterwards.

I found a really great website called fitness blender.com and it's completely free. You can pick any type of workout that you want to do whether it's cardio, HIIT, kettle bell, pilates, etc and you can pick the intensity and the length that you want and also if you want a warm up/cool down included. I LOVE IT!! I do it between 3-6 days a week and I never get bored because I can always change it up and you can also save your favourite workouts so that you can go back to them. It's a really good website AND it's free!!!.

Thank you so much godsgirl, I will definitely check out that website. I get bored too when I do the same thing every time.

I did my workout during nap time today! I did a 48 minutes turbo workout. Felt great! I've neglected my health over the last 2 years as I've had many challenges and now that things are back to normal, it feels great to get back to it :D I will try to continue and on days that isn't possible I will do it at night.

For those of you who are interested in supporting each other, there is no place for a group discussion, we will have to use this post.

Thanks everyone. I love to read all your replies! It keeps me motivated.

I totally get what your saying. i live in a small small community. If I want to go to the gym I would have to drive to it, so your looking at half hour to 45 min. And since almost every night one of the kids have some sort of activity its really hard.

now I could not sign my kids up to activities and use those nights to go to the gym, but how fair would it be for my kids then. And then its the cost, I really don't want to spend the money and gas to go.

so starting next week I think I'll join you at nap time and start some sort of excercise program. Its the only time I think I have time to myself lol! Also, it doesn't help that its been winter forever here otherwise I could go for a walk at night.

and purple bunny, I love food too. I think I eat pretty healthy most of the time, but its alot of it. I should acually follow canada's food guide (went to see a dietician last week with my guide group) and she gave out all sorts of stuff. I tried weight watchers, but I found it was expensive and somewhat really hard to follow. And I didn't have time to log and chart and count all day long.

I told dh that I would love to get a treadmill, I can walk on it when I want or run on it. We use to own an ellipticle machine but both of found it was way too hard on our body esp. on our knees.

sorry for going on and on, but I think as daycare providers its one of the hardest thing to do. We are around food all day, and with kids all day and our days never ever end.

It's true. It is hard. The reason why I started this post. We are always taking care of little angels and our families we neglect ourselves. And although we can't be perfect and do everything, I personally need to get healthy again and find the time.

I eat healthy all the time but I love good food. I eat too much of it. I decided to serve my dinner on a smaller plate and not have seconds unless it's salad. It's hard but I feel a difference. What I find hardest is when I finally get to sit down at 8pm when my kids are all in bed then all I want to do is eat! Lol

I have been working out at nap time and although I'd rather do it another time it's really the only time. Nights wouldn't work I don't think. And I don't have the time or money to go to the gym either.

I'm glad some of you are on board. It feels great to know others understand and we can all get inspired from one another.

I use to have a treadmill but was way too hard on my knees so I traded it for an elliptical. It's still very much winter here too, can't wait for some walks in the fresh air!

Love this post, I try to work out while the kids are sleeping as well. Fitness blender is an awesome site, I alternate videos, do weights and use my elliptical and treadmill. I use the machines more on the weekend as mine are loud.
I started a lifestyle change about 6 weeks ago and I have lost 12lbs. I basically eat clean for 3 days and then have a cheat day, then eat clean for two days then have another cheat day. This really seems to be working for me. Also drinking lots of water and drinking green tea. Last week I actually forgot Wednesday was my cheat day lol. I also use the My. Fitness pal app, it's awesome it tracks all my calories, carbs etc...

Best way to avoid temptation is to not have it in your house at all. Then if you REALLY want a sweet then you have to actually leave your house to get it, this helps in keeping things in moderation.

I have lost weight in the past by keeping a journal and writing down every last thing I eat and tallying it at the end of the day. You know exactly how many calories you are taking in and can't really be in denial. Also I have done the small portion route. I seem to have gained progressively more weight every time. Wish I could do it for the long haul but I was a professional cook before I opened my daycare and I also love food. My hubby really isn't much help either. He came from a family of unhealthy eaters. I do like to work out though, I got a stationary bike for Christmas. I use that a couple of times a week, then I mix in aerobics and weights throughout the week. I take the weekend off.

My hubs is in the middle of testing to see if he has fatty liver disease :(, so our eating habits are likely going to change as well. He's not an overly healthy eater, but since I cook, he eats healthy when at home. But proportions are out of control. A lot of meat and carbs, but he barely takes any vegetables.

I'm hoping his changes will help me as well! He started having a smoothie every morning for breakfast, and while I considered it, I get seriously hangry if I don't eat enough in the morning. Breakfast/morning snack is usually my downfall!

My DH and I eat according to the primal / paleo diet. Basically only natural food that can be eaten without processing. Lots of fruits, veg, meat, and nuts. A bit of dairy. No processed food - grains, beans, sugars. I allow myself to cheat occasionally but since I can still eat bacon, butter, eggs, fruits, etc there is a lot of good stuff in there. And large portions of the allowable foods are allowed, and there is also an exercise program... Basically lots of movement with spurts of cardio and heavy lifting (like a 'caveman' would do) :-)
Tons of info and recipes online. It's not the same as Atkins. In my last pregnancy I only gained 20 lbs and had a very healthy pregnancy, and lost it all in a month.
I would recommend looking into it!

I have lost weight in the past by keeping a journal and writing down every last thing I eat and tallying it at the end of the day. You know exactly how many calories you are taking in and can't really be in denial.

This doesn't work for me unfortunately. If I keep a journal I become obsessed. If I obsess over food, my problem becomes worse. I do not keep certain things in the house, cookies, chips, wine, chocolate, cheese. I bake everything for my daycare kids and put bananas in everything as as I HATE banana bread that even if I forget myself for a moment and mindlessly take a bite, I am repulsed by the taste and don't even swallow it...yuk!

My biggest issues are because I cook such good meals for my dc kids, and then for my own kids, and my husband is rarely home for dinner, that for me I end up getting take out, drive thru, eat to late, or dont eat at all. I really should practice what I preach when it comes to nutrition as I know an incredible amount about it and think it is very important.

I also hate exercise because it hurts. I can't stay on a treadmill for more than 20minutes as I am bored out of my skull. I can only manage that long because I have a tv in front of me. I can't run as I have horrific shin splints so I walk at about 3-31/2 mph on a steep incline. I have Jillian micheals body revolution which is 30 minute workouts of HIIT. This is great as long as I stick to it but initially it's not uncommon for my to end up fighting tears as it's just so painful. As soon as I don't do it for a day or two, I just procrastinate and make a million excuses up not to do it. It's more of a psychological issue I think.

Today I am clearing space in my basement to put the exercise mats back out to start again. I waste so much of my life obsessing over how I want to lose weight. I have about 80-100 to lose and no longer weigh myself as it is more important to focus on feeling healthy not the number or the reflection in the mirror. I feel so much better when I cut out alcohol, dairy and refined sugars. I have endometriosis so suffer with chronic pain when my inflammation is worsened which Is aggravated by those foods. The pain can be debilitating.

I am trying to take baby steps. I just completed a pledge to not drink alcohol for thirty days. I don't have a drinking problem lol but it was one thing that I could concentrate on which wouldn't put to much pressure on me. I tend to have a glass of wine, or a few when I've had a hard day, it's how i destress but I've stayed away from doing that now, even after my poopy carpet incident the other day. ;) I noticed a huge difference and after enjoying wine with my friend last night I am feeling the negatives now and feel that maybe what's best is total elimination of alcohol as a result :( Or at least until my overall health has improved lots and maybe I will be able to tolerate it better. I love wine and really appreciate good wines so it sucks.

I read a great quote on Instagram yesterday...

Hey bright sparks - I totally understand about obsession = giving up sometimes. We put an idea in our head with a # of lbs to lose, a specific date to lose it and an image of what we 'should' look like that when it doesn't happen we get discouraged and next thing we know we are sitting on the couch with a glass of wine, cheese cake and forget all about it until we feel bad again. Lol (that's me btw! Lol)

As long as you do it for you and what makes you feel good, that's all that matters. I have a goal in mind but I'm trying not to obsess about a specific date this time.

Just like quitting smoking you can try a million times but when you're ready you'll just do it!

I think that's a great start! Good for you! I've never heard of HITT but you're the second person to mention in, I'll have to check it out. I also love wine, not everyday but I enjoy my glass :)

If you ever want encouragement I definitely welcome anyone to join the post or send me a PM, I definitely need the encouragement myself so I love reading all these posts.

I use to eat a lot on the go too, more than I thought when both my husband and I worked outside the home. Maybe you could try to stop eating out and eating with your kids the yummy food you make! Not worry too much on the portion at first just switching to healthier food is also a great start.

It's hard to lose but the last time I did (after my second child), once I started seeing results that's when there was no stopping me. Now with 3 kids and the daycare I'm finding it a bit more difficult to focus as I'm so busy and exhausted by the end of the day. But it has to start somewhere! I encourage you to do what makes you feel great and love to see you succeed in losing the 80-100lbs you'd like to lose! Then we can start a post on our success story :D

Love the quote, Thanks for sharing :)

I've only done pole dancing once and LOVED it! That is truly a total body workout. I wish I could do those moves my teacher showed us! Wow, it was impressive.

It totally is. I am thinking of entering a competition, it would be rough because I would have to compete in the elite division and I am not sure I am ready to go up against some of the more incredible dancers.

Omg I don't know how some of you ladies exercise during the day. I sweat like a pig and absolutely HAVE to shower after a workout!! I usually abandon my husband after baby is in bed and hit the gym from 8-9. Then I come home, shower, and crash!

Really? Omg that's amazing! You must be in great shape if you can do that! You totally should, I use to compete in dance with my husband back in the day. There's no better time than the present.

I know. I'm trying it out. My husband is home with me during the day so I can always shower. That’s awesome that you go.

"Symptoms are not Enemies to be Destroyed, but Sacred Messengers who encourage us to Take Better Care of Ourselves!"

Me, I'm too cheap to go out for food and I'm at the point in my life where I worry about my health more than how much weight I've gained. But I have to say I do like a drink on the weekend. It's my down time and I feel like I deserve it but I do keep it in moderation. That's where the health thing comes in.

My hubby was diagnosed with celiac about a year ago and I had been pretty well wheat free until lately when I was having bathroom issues.lol. I found when I was wheat free, I tended to be able to keep my weight down somewhat. I now plan to mostly be wheat free with the exception of having the occasional wheat bread and/or wheat cereal to deal with the constipation issue.

Bright Sparks I am going to be one of your biggest cheerleaders. Today I tried on a couple of bathing suits and yeah they didn't look very good. I made my husband and I a stir fry with 8 different veggies and brown rice noodles and a stir fry sauce for dinner tonight. It was yummy and guilt free. My hubby had two helpings and yes, we like to eat out too.
My point is I am not going to beat myself up about the 35 lbs I need to lose and am going to make small doable changes that will not over whelm me causing me to quit and go back to my couch.
I am going to walk after dinner. Even if it is 20 minutes (my minimum) then it is still something. I understand Sports Illustrated will not be calling me for their swim suit edition and that is ok as I just want to be the healthiest I can be and make me and my family proud.
So Brightsparks I wish you well and if you need any encouragement just let us forum ladies know.:glomp:

I've finally reached the point where I have to give up the "all or nothing" mentality. It's ridiculous lol! Obviously is hasn't worked for me because I still have the same 30-40lbs to lose after several years. I have found that lately I am just focusing on making changes I can maintain. Now that it's nicer out I started walking to pick up my daughter after school, tomorrow I'm adding the walk to drop her off. Also, we were recently gifted a weight machine, so now we have. That, plus a recumbent bike I scored at good will, and an elliptical someone gave us when they moved and couldn't take it with them. Maybe I'll just have to park my tush on that bike tomorrow at nap time and catch up on the forum ;). And pedal the bike of course ha ha.

Keep up the good work ladies! Thanks for the motivation and the advice. It's nice to know I'm not alone in this :)

I run on my threadmill for 35 minutes, 3 x a week, while the kids are napping. I have the baby monitor with me. I have been exercising while the kids nap for years. I keep myself fit, and its very important to me, unless I'm sick, I stick with my routine :)

I don't think I could concentrate working out during dayhome hours . Last summer I started eating right , lost 40 lbs and have kept that off !! I'm trying to lose the last 25 lbs , I find myself dreaming about being a runner !! Which is weird because I've never cared for it before !! I am watching the snow melt and sidewalks appear and I'm so excited to start a couch to 5k workout !!
I have 5 kids , oldest is 25 and youngest is 5 , besides looking after my parents and my dayhome , the need to run overwhelms me sometimes !!! Lol
I have the eating down and have a cheat day , which works for me , but now want to tone and achieve my last goal ( of weight loss )
This weekend while visiting my mom in the hospital , we were explaining who's who in the family and the nurse couldn't believe my 24 yr old daughter and I weren't sisters !!!!!
Very nice for me !!! But my sister who is one year older than me .... Not as impressed lol !!!

I'm not sure if anyone is interested in the Primal Diet, which I mentioned in a previous post, but on www.marksdailyapple. com every Friday a real life story is posted showing different people's success stories. They are very inspiring and have encouraged me to keep going with developing better habits. You don't have to buy anything special to eat this way, so I'm not trying to sell anything, I have just found this way makes sense and is doable for me and my family!

So yesterday I did a "pinterest" arm routine which wasn't difficult at all but was my first baby step. I intend to do this every other day once the babes have gone down for a nap and gradually increase the weight and reps. Took me 10 minutes once through so I don't care how busy any of you are, hide in the bathroom for 10 minutes from your own kids if you have to, and do it in there lol ;)

Last night I found a "morning" workout which is HIIT on pinterest again. I asked my hubby to do it in our bedroom in the morning with me and he agreed. We had our running shoes on and our workout gear and the whole thing took about 20 minutes and I was breathless and sweating which obviously shows it was good for me. I feel very positive moving forward and plan to do that 5 to 6 days a week.

This morning I had my healthy breakfast of eggs and lunch today is TruBlend of rice and quinoa with swiss chard, tomatoes and chicken breast oven baked in passata with garlic. Loads of water and herbal tea and I must make an effort to eat an afternoon snack at around 3 too. I'm making a curry for dinner which I'll eat with salad.

I know all about how to eat healthy and lose weight. I just typically hate exercise and suffer from PTSD and CF which can be debilitating and then I just use all my mental energy to focus on the kids. Healthy eating and exercise are the best treatment for both these issues so I am not going to just hope I can stick with things, but work hard at it to succeed.

My daughter is going to be starting to train for a kids triathlon which if I do alongside her, I think would have some small enough goals for me to focus on in the coming months and then I hope to be able to run a 5k on Toronto Island in September. I think I have some realistic short term and long term goals focussing on being and feeling healthy and happy without the need for obsessing over diets or numbers on the scale.

Thanks everyone for your kind words...I really like this thread :)

I found the website to be interesting although I am not a fan of most diet plans which totally eliminate total food groups. I also don't like it when people rant and bash other people or certain things which does happen on this site which is fair enough as it is a blog with someones personal opinions.

I think what is important, is to treat your body as it simply is, unique. Some people tolerate a raw diet whereas other people will get sick, its the same with lots of diets. Gluten and Wheat intolerances effect over 70% of the western population but it doesn't mean some people cant eat it without issue. My daughter bloats almost instantly after eating gluten so I try to have her as gluten free as possible but she doesn't get stomach ache or poor bowel movements as a result like myself and my husband. Its only my knowledge that has me observing her and knowing that it is a result of an intolerance. My son doesn't have an intolerance, the only one in the house, and I am so grateful as he is vegetarian and a lot of his meat alternatives are made from wheat gluten as soy is just unsafe for everyone. I buy some complex grains with lower levels of gluten such as kamut as they are very healthy and a complete protein also and easier to digest. Each to there own. I love to learn about different methods and what works for others...its always great to share in others triumphs while trying new things and trying to discover the right path for myself :)

my dd last year (age 13) did the couch to 5k. She really liked it. And then in aug. ran our local 5k. She is not a runner, but she was sick of always being picked last or not picked at all at school for physical activities (she is a dancer) well she ran it, did an great time, and can you believe it that no one belives her that she ran it. This year, we may even do the color run.

now I've been trying to get my eating under control before i throw in exercising. Its hard let me tell you. But I've been really cutting down on alot of the junky stuff and only drink one coffee a day. And I had a sip of pop and I had a gut ache so it must be a good thing.

I had heard from a personal trainer that the "eating" part is the most important thing and you can loose weight just from changing your eating habits. This coming from someone who makes money by helping you to exercise. That being said you will obviously see results faster and as well have the many benefits of exercise if you exercise...just thought I would mention it as I am sure some of us are looking for a small step in the right direction but can get bogged down with feeling you have to "do it all.".

I wish us all success !! Each step is important and matters !!!
Believe me being at the hospital for the last 2 weeks with my mom has shown me I must do everything to be as healthy as I can !!
Some things come up I get that , my younger sister is a breast cancer survivor ( six years )!!!! And by indicators of life styles shouldn't of been, all natural girl !! Organic , only ate their own meat , and food , even most fruit !!! Homemade soap you name it , she does it !!! So it was a shock when pregnant she was diagnosed at 35 !

Acorn could you explain what a normal day of eating looks like ?
Sure...
Breakfast - I do 3 eggs and coffee.
Morning snack - fruit and nuts
Lunch - big salad with leftover meat from prev nights dinner
Afternoon snack - fruit with yogurt or cheese or avocado and salsa
Dinner - steak / chicken / pork / fish (we usually BBQ) with steamed or grilled veggies.

Just an example of a day but lots of other thing are possible.

I'm loving that this post has started this wave of us supporting each other. I did my first HITT video today (never heard of it before) and I'm dying tonight! Wow! I forgot I had those muscles...lol

I continue to cut down on my portions and eat mostly protein, veggies, fruit and LOTS of water. This wasn't difficult as that's what I'm use to, it's just the size of my portions that were way too big.

Every post I read I find inspiration to continue and I wish the same for everyone. Bright sparks- I want to eat what you had for lunch today...yum!

So... today I bit the bullet and walked my daughter to and from school :D Yay me lol. It felt great. Yesterday was a struggle with all the kids in the stroller (it's kind of like a wagon so it has no buckles) so my husband took pity on me and bought me two portable high chair seats that buckle up, for the younger two, and two snack cups ( the spill proof kind), also for the younger two. It helped a lot!! Today was much better. I am a member of spark people and I have the activity tracker pedometer thing... i have my goal set for 10,000 steps to start with and today I actually made that thing light up!! I was very happy. My daughter saw my tracker light up and started cheering " YOU WON! YOU WON!! GOOD JOB, MOM!" that was the best feeling ever :D

Tomorrow I have to walk an extra 2km since I have mom's group at church... so I prepped the kids lunches for tomorrow so I couldn't have an excuse to take the van instead.

Thanks for keeping me motivated, ladies!!!

Kudos KellyBelly...these kinds of changes seem small to those who don't struggle but the difference between taking the van or walking is a huge mental hurdle to get over so I am super proud of you for that. I think it helps that the temp is coming up slightly too, for obvious reasons making it easier to get out and about, but also to lift the foggy haze from our heads that can quickly consume us during "cabin fever" season which has been especially bad this Winter for most parts of Canada.

I had a rough afternoon and evening and want to comment on it here versus a new thread because I don't really want to have a dedicated thread to obsess over and only want to reflect on it because of the way I chose to deal with it....so I'm going to hijack this for a minute but will get back to the food, I promise.

Yesterday my 11 year old son went missing for 40 minutes and I had a total melt down...during daycare hours. I had to put all the kids in playpens and leave my nearly 13 yr old in the house with them while I got in the car and drove the route to school to look for him. I have PTSD and anxiety which I battle hard against to not let it interfere with my day to day life, but its times like these that I go from 0-60 instantly. I had back to back anxiety attacks for about 25 minutes, thankfully the fact that I had my daughter in front of me and daycare kids to care for I was able to get myself together relatively well and quickly once I located him. There was a club after school that got cancelled last minute and my daughter told my son to his face that he was to get the bus home. He didn't get the bus so I assumed he walked with friends but after 30 minutes of no sign of him I looked down the road that he should have been walking up and there was no sign. Its a long main road so would take him 15 minutes to walk it in my line of sight. I went into the school and alerted them but had to return home obviously. I was gone for no more than 5 minutes and while some may have packed the dckids into the car, I used may best judgement considering the circumstances and left them with my daughter for all of 5 minutes. Don't I see my son climbing out of the bloody wooded area with friends on my way home. I have never felt such relief after feeling such a mixture of emotions including fear, dread, suicidal, my world was ending and I had to change my pants and threw up as soon as I got in the house, that's how much panic I was in that my body was as much out of control as my mind. My son is anal about rules, its part of him being 2e and the change in routine is what had him all confused. He walked home with friends and did a normal 11 year old thing of cutting through a wooded area, having fun with his friends. I spoke to him a few times last night and he has apologized and we have gone over what he should do in certain situations. He didn't get in trouble, I just made it clear how worried parents get when they don't know the whereabouts of their children. I know the way I reacted to this situation is my issue not his.

So what I was leading into is nutrition and alcohol related. I am destructive with food so after an incident like this I automatically binge on food or binge drink to mask my feelings. I wanted take out but fortunately because I had called my husband he raced home and by some luck he was only 40 minutes away unlike today for example where he is 3 hours away (covers the entire province of Ontario for work). I was able to practice self care by telling him that I was going to have a drink....rather than buying a bottle of wine, I bought 4 small bottles of something else so that when they were gone, it would be over, rather than having a bottle that I would have a glass of and then another tomorrow and so on. I wanted to isolate what I was doing to the acute rather than have it throw me off the positive path I am on. Generally that is what would happen and I would fall into a hole, a little deeper than the one I have usually dragged myself out of. My husband made a curry for dinner, sorted the kids out and I took my drink upstairs and read a book and watched tv. I kept my misery and depression to myself as I didn't want it to transfer to my son as guilt which would absolutely happen as he and I have a very unique connection due to him being very perceptive of others feelings and I wanted to do as much damage control as possible. This may seem like its being written by a complete basket case, but really in order to not let this kind of thing effect my daycare and my children it comes at a heavy price and usually when I am alone, or in a safe place my world can come crashing down. Its really rough and I am working through it and if you new me then you would understand that the way I handled things last night with the choices I made around eating and drinking, this was a huge step in the right direction for me.

I have not eaten today, no appetite at all but I am going to force myself to have some eggs for brekkie and make them for morning snack for my one dckid who isn't napping, and while I am still thinking about what happened yesterday I am owning what happened and acknowledging that it is done.

Another quote......"I didn't choose it, I couldn't control it, I can't change it." So I need to learn from it and let it go.

Thanks for letting me share this ladies, it means a lot.....no HIIT today for me, I'm going to do it every other day for a couple of weeks so I don't hurt to much and get disheartened. I'm going to alternate the days with an arm workout and an abs workout so I'm still doing something. Lunch today is salmon, quinoa and lemon garlic swiss chard..yummy.

Brightsparks, I really hope you have a much better day today.....it can be really frightening when you feel your kids can be in any kind of danger or missing. On the news yesterday morning an 11 yr old boy was missing and later found. I recently have been letting my two boys 8 & 11 walk home from the bus sometimes. Since this happened I'm not sure if I should, I'm really struggling with this....the 11yr old really wants more independents.

It's great that you recognize your not so great choices in coping with your PTSD and are trying to make better choices.

My kids have been walking home for a couple of years. Prior to our current home they walked too but it was even closer which was a good baby step for both them and myself. I worry that no matter how well prepared they are things still happen. It is such a waste of mental energy worrying about things I have no control over but this is something I do a lot of and am working hard to get over. It is a constant struggle not to transfer this to the kids as the last thing I want to do is raise children into anxious adults. I seek out ways for my kids to be independent as much as possible as I really don't want to lock them away and never have. They have delivered flyers and my daughter babysits regularly...saved $500 for a laptop in the last 6 months :) and they are sharing a paper route, 2 delivery days a week, starting next week that is on the sub division behind our house. I also encourage them to walk to the dollar store together or to grab milk from the convenience store down the road. They think I am doing it to give them independence and responsibility but really the number one reason is to try and deal with my fears lol I totally trust them, but I have a very hard time letting them out of my sight without feelings of overwhelming fear. I hope that with every baby step I take, the easier it will get for me. My daughter has been going to camp for years for 1 or 2 nights with girl guides but this summer she will be gone for 2 weeks and next year is going overseas for 10 days so that will be interesting lol

Bright sparks, I think you are incredibly brave. To acknowledge what you are going through in such an honest way is truly the way for you to heal and better yourself.
You have just been through a major shock and your mind and body are now in recovery mode. You need to be kind and gentle with yourself right now and don't beat yourself up.
You are a good mom who wisely did not want your son to see you in full reaction to the trauma of having lost him for a few minutes.
I would suggest you slowly get back on course with your exercise and healthy eating regiment. Your reaction wanting to use food and alcohol to soothe yourself in normal. The fact that you didn't get take out and have devised another plan to curb your drinking is great. Have you ever thought of talking to someone professionally who can help you deal with your anxiety?
I have an anxiety as well. I can not drive on highways since my daughter was a toddler. Where I live the highways are horrible and I envision all kinds of horrible things happening when I am on the highway. I am a terrible passenger!
Praise yourself for not succumbing to downing that big bottle of wine and hitting the drive through.

also, I don't deprive myself either. Yesterday I had a chocolate bar, not a big one but just enough. I found by doing this, I tend to eat better during the day. If I deprive myself then I will over eat and start at square one.

I am in treatment currently. I am involved in trauma therapy and boy have I ever come a long way. Sometimes things get worse before they get better though. As I have become more conscious of myself and everything that is jiggling around in my head, my anxiety has become a problem. Honestly, it's only been the last year or so that this has been a "generalized" anxiety whereas prior to that it was very rare and specific circumstances that I would feel a slight anxiety. I have major trust issues which stem from my past and although I understand it now, I'm still not able to overcome it. I am a work in progress. I purchased a book and cd about mindfulness a couple of weeks ago which I intend to start working through which deals with mindfulness in all areas of life from thought processes, eating habits etc etc and I am optimistic that this will help me.

I am so thankful to be able to speak freely on this forum. Most people deal with some form or mental health issue quietly and painfully in secret. It is still a major taboo subject and even I don't open up to many people about things although that is changing. Thank you all for your kind words and encouragement. I will be continuing to make healthy food choices and exercise which I know are an important part of my recovery.

I love how mental illness is becoming less stigmatized, Clara Hughes is riding across Canada to spread awareness. Thank you so much for opening up to us, I truly appreciate it.

Thanks for sharing this. I am trying very hard to talk to my kids about depression and mental illness at an appropriate level to encourage a good attitude about the subject and also to reinforce that when they do see me in certain ways that they know it is not their fault and that while I am ill, I am still the same person worthy of as much love and compassion as every other person on this planet. Its difficult but perhaps they will become better people as a result of some of my misfortune. However hard things are, I do think my toughest times have armed me with my strongest tools. They make me a better person for sure.

I just wanted to share my smoothie recipe with everyone it jam packed with healthy stuff. I have this everyday either for breakfast or lunch.

1/2 cup of unsweetened almond or coconut milk
1/3 cup of no fat yogurt ( I use activia yogurt as it has my daily probiotics)
1 tsp of vanilla extract
1 tsp of maca powder
1 tbsp of cacao powder
1/2 tsp of cinnamon
1tbsp of coconut oil
1 tsp of flaxseed oil
A handful of baby spinach
1 cup of frozen berries ( I use strawberry and blueberry blend)
And lastly 1 scoop of protein powder

The best time to drink this smoothie is within 1/2 hr after working out.

I hope you enjoy, let me know what you think if you try it.

My daughter is a smoothie fiend.....absolutely would live off them if I let her. Can I just recommend a much better source of probiotic as activia is not good...full of artificial stuff and low quality probiotics that probably don't even make it where they need to. Kefir...comes in different flavours and organic too....relatively inexpensive when you figure that you only need a tbsp or two to have more than the rda. None of the nasty stuff in it either.

This is my daughters typical smoothie recipe

2tbsp Kefir
coconut water
frozen berries
raw local honey..1tbsp...good to sweeten and also prevents seasonal allergies if it is local
banana
scoop of vega one....Natural protein powder and greens in one...free of gmo, soy, corn, dairy, gluten
vega oil which is a great omega 3-6-9 and dha oil- couple of drops
1/4 avocado
She will sometimes add cacoa powder or nibs
She also likes to add collards or kale...she is always super happy with herself that she will consume a vegetable she hates in a smoothie.

I invested in a vitamix last summer so no matter what I put in, it will come out blended completely smooth. I can not tolerate smoothies or juices. I hate the texture and I also don't have a sweet tooth. I am one of those weird people who dislikes ice cream too lolol

Thanks, I will defiantly try out the kefir. I like to add yogurt in my smoothie as it makes it more thicker. I try to stay away from bananas as they are a higher carb fruit. The protein powder I use is also GMO, soy, dairy and gluten free as well it's a brand called kaizen it's also organic and the container it comes in is biodegradable.

I might check out that brand thanks for sharing. I love that her powder is a complete including greens. She gets above and beyond her rda of greens in smoothie form per day. She has a pint for breakfast and refrigerates the rest for home time at which point she will give it a 5 second whizz and its ready to go. The kefir in a bottle is thicker than the tub I find. I ideally want her smoothies dairy free but the probiotic benefits of the kefir dramatically outweigh the negatives of the dairy and she will only add 1/2 to 1 banana to the whole thing which makes about 2 pints.

I commend you, bright sparks! I also have anxiety issues and they really make life hard at times. You did really well thinking outside the situation, you caught yourself before spiraling out of control. Good for you! I hope the mindfulness cd helps. For me, I find that when I'm in the middle of an anxiety attack I pray. I also try and remember that it's my stupid body fighting me and it will be over soon lol. But let me tell you if my kid was missing for even a minute I would be in a different state... That's terrifying. I'm glad it turned out ok and that you are recovering. You are a great mom!

Also I'm totally going to buy some kefir lol....

I love the Vega products... The creator of those products is from BC and has written some great books on nutrition. He is a triathlete and is a vegan! So he has some excellent methods for getting a well balanced diet while getting a lot of physical exercise. I'm a meat lover so it's not for me but his books have excellent information.

I love vega products too. No funky ingredients either. I buy the vega one powder for my daughters smoothies, which is a protein and greens powder in one and I buy the vega one bars too which include the same amount of "stuff" as the powder for my husband when he is rushing out the door early in the morning. I wanted a vegan product for sure and encourage my son to have it too as he is vegetarian but he only has a smoothie occasionally whereas my daughter loves the stuff and would drink it constantly if I let her :)

I tried to buy kefir at superstore yesterday, but there was only strawberry flavor so I opted out... maybe next time :)

Today we had another big dump of snow.... I was so sad when I looked out the window lol. But, I got the kids ready and did it anyway!

I am super tired today... I hope everyone else is doing well!!

Wow that is a high but looks so yummy!

So I fell off the wagon all weekend! Although I was 'careful' not to over eat, I did AND I munched ! Lol It was my son's bday this weekend, with guest over both days, lunch, dinners and cake every time ! Gggrrrr I'm feeling it today.

Not going to kick myself too much as these things will happen but I just don't feel good as I did the last few weeks and I'm finding it difficult to get back into it.

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend! Keep sharing those yummy recipes and workout stories :)

I hurt my shoulder on Saturday...rotary cuff injury so not only does it restrict my exercising but also potentially could get worse if I'm not careful lifting my daycare crew. Today I am going to modify a lot of the exercises that are in my HIIT for example i do jumping jacks to get my heart rate up, instead I will substitute for jogging on the spot. Typically I get disheartened and quit at this point, but instead I am just going to try and modify. My purpose for exercise long term is to be strong, but initially I just want to form new habits of doing some kind of exercise everyday. At first it is just 15-20 minutes daily alternating HIIT with strength training on different areas of my body and I hope that over time I will enjoy it more and increase my activity and intensity levels.

I was sick with a really bad cold for a month and FINALLY was able to start exercising again. I was totally in cope mode, everyone including myself had a horrible cough and it was really sucky to stop exercising on my treadmill because I couldn't do anything without coughing (one of my dck even got pneumonia so bad she was hospitalized). But I was back on the treadmill last night for the first time and it was awesome. I have also started doing yoga again with the kids in the morning, YouTube has awesome kids yoga videos to follow.

But I also wanted to throw the advice out there that the Mediterranean style diet has been proven to be incredibly healthy and those that follow it in the long term have been shown to have little or no chronic illnesses in old age. It isn't necessarily a weight loss plan, but is a lifestyle choice that makes for a healthy heart and body. I am sure many of you heard about it on the news.

So how is everyone doing lately? I'm taking some positive steps towards a healthier lifestyle...quite literally. My phone has a built in pedometer and today was the first day I got the stroller loaded up and went for a walk with my crew. I got 6000 of my daily 10k steps in by 10am  I would love to do this daily as I got a really good sweat on...eww I know lol, and really got some rapid breathing going on as I pushed the stroller up and down some hills so I think I got a half decent cardio session in. I am going to get a monitor to keep track of it. I'm knackered now but feel great to be honest.

From a nutritional perspective I signed up for loads of free classes at my local Goodness Me store. Last night was my first and I have two more this week and intend to go as frequently as possible. Last nights class was about Liver detoxification and the speaker was a local ND. I have an appointment next week to meet with a new ND but have decided to cancel and now have an appointment with this woman. For those of you familiar with my post history, I have mentioned that I suffer from endometriosis and also PTSD. I have a whole host of health issues which really stem from not taking care of myself and they really just do a great job of making each other that much worse. I am very optimistic that the ND can help me as she used a couple of examples last night on how supporting the liver can have such phenomenal results in treating hormone and women's health issues amongst so many other things. I spoke with her after and she has a lot of experience working with PCF and endo. I knew a lot of what she spoke about in terms of supplementation and healthy eating but learning what common ailments are clear indications of a toxic liver was absolutely fascinating. Some of the other classes I am attending are skincare-what's toxic and what's not; breast health; natural treatments for stress, depression and anxiety; anti-inflammatory eating and a heavy metal and toxin elimination class too. There are so many different classes almost daily at all locations and I highly recommend people within driving distance of a store look into these free classes. They are all presented by ND's, RHNP's and other healthcare professionals. I absolutely love this stuff and had considered going to school for nutrition but its one of those careers where earning a full time wage is something that most graduates don't make even after 5 years in the field and with kids and a mortgage its just something I learn about for general interest instead.

I haven't read all the other replies, but here's what I do (I run a home day care with my own toddler and three full-time kids).

After lunch time, the kids nap for usually one and a half to two hours. My daughter is phasing out of her nap (which works for me because I am trying to wean her from breastfeeding -- she'll be 3 in August), so I set her up on the couch with her favourite movie and a portable DVD player (I don't feel bad because she doesn't get much tv other than that, and my day care is very educational with a weekly theme and preschool learning activities).

I will take half an hour and do my workout. I do Pilates from Cassey Ho at www.blogilates.com. I am following her beginner workout calendar and it's about half an hour a day.

My day care closes at 5, and on Mondays my husband comes home from work at 3, so at 5 I do a half hour of cleaning and then make supper. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays my husband gets off work at 6. So I have an hour to clean and cook. If I can fit a half hour of cardio (I love Zumba, and have a Zumba XBOX Kinnect game that I love) I will do it then, or we will go for a big family walk with the dogs after supper.

I also try to do stretching with the kids once a day after nap time. We do some fun and simple stretches to wake our bodies up and make us feel good.

I follow the Mediterranean style diet too! Have you read The Mediterrasian Way? It's an amazing cookbook!

I've heard of a lot of people going vegan, and I myself tried that for a month, but I ended up being extremely tired (even with proper meal planning and supplementing). I am still serious abut animal welfare, so I don't eat eggs (they just kill the baby male chickens by throwing them in a meat grinder because they are useless to the egg industry -- even organic egg farms do this) and dairy is a once-a-week treat when my hubby makes homemade Calzones. We don't buy poultry or red meat (except when we can get locally raised, organic bison) and so we mainly eat fish and shellfish.

A lot of people are also hardcore paleo, I've even heard about the (in my mind) absurd "Inuit Diet". I've seen a lot of people go Paleo and just gain weight! And when you look at the two healthiest cultures -- the Mediterranians and the Asians -- they eat a LOT of carbs!

I think a vegan diet requires a lot of work to really make it a balanced diet, I don't think I could ever do it.

My brother did the paleo diet for about a year, he lost weight while he was doing it but for some reason he stopped and seems to have gained back everything he lost. But I can't say he did it very well, he considered a steak and an orange to be a complete meal! LOL

I really try to make my meals really balanced and full of "real" food, I used to follow the South Beach Diet religiously before I had kids but I find it hard now. I eat a small amount of dairy and have started using olive oil a lot, which comes from the Mediterranean style diet.

Good job!! I have a spark activity tracker and some days I have a hard time reaching the 10k steps goal... I think it might not be tracking well lol because sometimes I walk 4km and it still shows I'm under!

I definitely would say you got a good cardio session! Pushing a stroller with 2 or more kids is lots of work lol. When I had my quad stroller I would sweat buckets just in a 1km trip. I'm so glad I have a jogging type stroller now, way easier to maneuver but I still get a good workout because I can walk faster.

I have dropped 5lbs since I started walking daily and tracking my calories (I think about 3 weeks?) and there have been cheat days in there so I am very happy about that. I am trying not to put so much pressure on myself for perfection- and this time around it has been working :) I'll go out for a meal once in a while and not worry that it's a billion calories, then the next day I track again. As long as it's not every other day, this method works for me. Plus, I've been biking and watching tv or listening to music for about 45 min each night (on the days I can't get out to walk). Right now it's spring break so I don't have to walk to the school. Come next week, it's back to 5k/day round trip.

As far as diet goes, I've almost completely cut wheat out. Not because it's a fad, but because I've figured out that it genuinely does NOT make me feel good at all... that and sugar but I'm working on that one ;)

Thanks for keeping things going ladies! Love reading your posts :)

Well I started this post so determined and positive to get back into shape and LOVED the support you all ladies gave. THEN I had a very busy 3 weeks (bday parties, entertaining, cooking, baking, cake decorating, sewing orders) it was insane. So I fell off the workout/diet wagon and gained my 10lbs that I had lost right back :( now that things are finally back to a normal busy (lol) I need to get things going again and I'm having a VERY Hard time doing so. I have my last cake order to complete today so I can focus on me again!

Bright Sparks, those classes sound amazing ! I'd love to attend some of those but I don't think they offer them here. I should check it out.

I totally understand, this was me last year! I had a lot on the go ( I do cakes too -not as many since we moved provinces though) and with kids underfoot etc, it makes it difficult. Just get back on track! You can do it :D and if all else fails and you don't have time for exercise, make sure your diet in those days is as close to ideal as possible... Easier said than done I know lol.

Today is a new day!

On a side note I did my first day of the pop Pilates yesterday and almost died lol. Then this morning the calendar said to do a one minute plank. Not happening! Ha ha. I probably could have done one yesterday morning, before I did 30 minutes of Pilates ;) but my abs could not take one minute of plank after all the work they did last night. I feel so out of shape! But it makes me even more determined to do the one month and say I survived!

I will definitely get back into exercising this week! I checked out the calendar you mentioned and registered today. Let's see what comes out of that!

Good for you ! I love hearing about all of you working out, it really draws me in, I find it so encouraging ! Keep it up!

I was thinking about this thread last night. Well I have daycare mom who decided to get fit. Which is great, but one of the problems is that she is neglected her kids which equals in a horrible diaper rash.

also, I think the way she going about it is all wrong. so at the gym there is a fitness trainer who is helping her. But all she drink is the protien drinks. And doesn't eat any sugar, or real food. I'm sorry but to me that is so unrealistic. The problem with it is that sure she is losing weight but she will also gain it all back once she stops.

Ouch! That's inexcusable behaviour towards her kids and kind of ridiculous to be honest. The amount of time it takes to change a diaper is all of 2 minutes and what the heck is she doing throughout the day to neglect the child to the point that they are not being changed? Not sure its just because she is taking an hour out of her day to exercise. That simply wouldn't result in diaper wash...must be more to it I think.

Fad diets brainwash the best of us at some point with the "promise" of fast weight loss. Add to that a so called "professional" telling them its okay to do it, I can understand how she could have her head in the clouds. She will learn soon enough. If you are on any kind of "diet" you are doomed to fail eventually. Its not sustainable to eat a highly restricted meal plan. Balance in all areas of life is where success lies but we are surrounded by so many influences brainwashing us to think and believe otherwise. Not to mention the fact that it is easier said than done.

yup your right. today in the morning we were talking about eggs and my kids love to eat eggs before school (with ham or veggies) well she's telling me that she makes them the night before and microwaves them and its because egg whites take longer to make in the morning and so does chopping veggies (I chop mine when I bring them home and store them in ziplock bags)

then she posts how she hates greek yogurt but can only eat plain so she is now dumping protien powder in it and freezing it so its like ice cream, blah gross. She can only eat certain fruit too. I know this will never last, yes I would love to be skinny too (after 4 kids ) but I like to eat a cookie or a have some chocolate too.

So on the working out topic, I've gotten back on track! I walk at least 1/2 hour with the kids in the morning to start off our day (love it!) even today in the rain. I'm eating right and exercising at night after the kids go to bed. I spoke to my dad about getting in shape and found a goal to work towards. My dad is going to be 77 this year and is in better shape then me, hell he's in better shape then most 20 yo! Lol he's a cyclist and rides up to 200 km a day in some of his rides! Some last days too, it's amazing to see him.

I've always dreamed of doing a ride with him and when I told him he said I better hurry up and get in shape as he's not getting any younger. I've decided to try my best to get in shape to make that dream come true as I know he will have to retire his bike at some point sooner than later. It's now or never. He got himself a new bike and gave me his old one,i got myself a bike stand so I can work out indoor as well as out. I'm very excited. So far I'm back to eating healthy on low calories and exercising. Feels great!

Where did you get the bike stand from? Sounds like something my husband would love for when I am on the treadmill...we can do cardio together then :)

My husband has one and loves it! It works best on "road tires " since other tires have studs and grooves etc and can be noisy.

It's so empowering to hear other peoples successes. Yes you had a rough patch but such is life. Good for you getting back on track.

Where did you get the bike stand from? Sounds like something my husband would love for when I am on the treadmill...we can do cardio together then :)

Thank you! Yeah everyone gets those patches, trick is to not get discouraged and get back on the horse ! Lol

Good ones can be quite expensive (well for me), starts at about $300. The on the Amazon link is not one I'm familiar with but I've heard cheap ones are no good. I got mine from Kijiji. It's a magnetic one. I asked my dad since he knows all about them. Just do your research before buying one. I don't have the money to buy new so used it is! I paid $75 for one that is worth over $400 new.

I’ll let you know how I like it!

I just picked one at random lol, but yes- for sure do your research and get the best you can afford :) That's what I like about amazon- usually there are lots of reviews to comb through to help make your decision before buying.

How is everyone doing?? I've been a little off with the diet (family gatherings etc) but have been working out pretty much every day :) I usually walk 5km (school run) and do my pilates also. I'm not losing weight yet again, but I think it's because I've indulged in too much salt, and when I start any type of muscle toning stuff it usually curbs my weight loss for a bit. I read something about water retention at the start of exercising... either way I need to just keep it up and watch my salt!!

I look forward to hear how the rest of you are doing :)

I did a crazy butt workout today... twenty-five minutes of hardcore butt pilates. That's what I did when the kids were napping. Tonight I'm either going to go for a brisk walk for half an hour or do half an hour of Zumba.

Nice! Good job :) Better walk today while you can, tomorrow it might hurt to walk lol!

I've got a short walk planned, then my pilates and the exercise bike to finish off my cardio.

so, I went on vacation to florida and just came back (was gone for 13 days-we drove) well, we had some rainy days while in florida so I decided to go to the gym. I started on the treadmill for 20 min. I thought I was going to die. So the next day I went again, and again and again. I would go in the morning and the afternoon, for a half hour. I started off 20 min on treadmill and then some weights. I can't believe how great I started to feel. Heck my clothes started to fit (if not loose) I couldn't believe it. So now I'm home and I'm looking into getting a treadmill from kijjiji. I like the fact that you can walk and run on it. So while I was going to the gym, dh started to join me too.

the only thing is that I noticed that I didn't lose any weight, but I bought the magazine from people (its the yellow cover thats on sale now) called "half their size" and some of the women said that as long as your noticing that your clothes are fitting better thats what matters. And its true.

today I put on a large shirt and it fit, couldn't believe it and my muffin top isn't hanging over my jeans like they use too. The only bad part is that I can see all my stretch marks (I've had 4 kids) and that stinks but dh thinks that they will dissappear as I get more toned and thinner (wishfull thinking lol)

I have a highschool reunion in may and my 40th birthday in september so I have some goals, but I want to wear a 2 piece bathing suit or a nicer tankini by my pool.

That's awesome! Good job! It was super rainy here yesterday so I hopped on my recumbent bike with my iPad....

As for stretch marks, I swear bio oil works wonders!! I had a small bottle and started using it on my lower tummy at night before bed. My husband pointed out how much lighter my stretch marks were on my lower tummy as opposed to the upper area, so now I'm using it everywhere lol, and it's making a big difference! Costco has a crazy deal on it, a small bottle and a huge bottle, for $25. It's definitely worth trying.

You lost fat and gained muscle. And muscle will help you burn more fat.

Keep on going, girl!

I'm having such a hard time getting my act together. It seems that everywhere I turn there's an array of quick diet fixes which obviously aren't the answer and any number of exercise options but there really isn't anything out there dealing with the psyche of eating disorders. I know there is no quick fix and this is a lifestyle change but mentally I just can't seem to even get on track. When I'm not thinking about my family, job or school application I am obsessing about losing weight...if I drive anywhere I find myself fantasizing about being thin, it's ridiculous. And then when I let myself down I just feel even more guilty and hate myself for not trying hard enough, or at all. I would be happy if I was trying my best and going at a snails pace, but it just isn't happening. Without meaning to sound crazy it's as if my subconscious is trying to sabotage me/myself.

I have a friend who runs Zumba classes twice a week and I want to go. She has even said I can have a few free classes initially...she is doing what she can to encourage me and she knows I love to dance, but for some reason It is becoming an increasing occurrence that I find a reason, even a BS reason to not do anything for myself that does not include food, watching movies or enjoying a glass of wine. On the face of things I'm sure some people may think that I am just lazy but Ia sure you I'm not. I have complex PTSD and because I put every ounce of mental energy into caring for everyone else it leaves me depleted in the ability to meet my own needs. I think aswell because of my past failure my outlook is blue and it's like I commit to failing before I even try.

No magic pill, or one piece of advice to make my brain function differently but I really needed to vent. I have a treadmill, Jillian Micheals DVDs, and know a ridiculous amount of info on healthy nutrition but still do I do anything.....no! What the hell is wrong with me!!!!!

Sorry, I have been away from internet... i tried to reply on my phone but no luck lol

I'm sorry you are having such a rough go Bright sparks! I just hate how we can wear so many hats for the sake of others, but when it comes to ourselves we tend to sabotage our efforts. I definitely don't think you are wring to think we sabotage ourselves. Especially people (myself included) who have emotional "issues" at times. It's a sad cycle. I hope you can break free of it soon, because you deserve to be happy!

Try not to put so much pressure on yourself, I know that has REALLY worked wonders for me. Now get your ass to a free zumba class!!

Hang in there... one step at a time. Big hugs to you
