Hi everyone

Happy Friday!!! Okay so yesterday I mentioned to one of my daycare dads that when I changed his son (16 months) yesterday the pee smell was very strong-almost like a toxic smell....I walked into the room to get hi, as soon as nap time was over and the smell was so strong that it threw be back a bit lol the whole room smelt like strong pee it was very gross ...like I said I told dad about this and he told me he gets yeast infections from time to time :huh:

Yeast is naturally occurring on everybody's skin. It thrives in warm moist areas. Like the diaper area. When there is an imbalance in the warmth/moisture/cleansing, there can be an increase in the yeast colonies. Yup, gross, but common enough. I recently had a parent refuse to do anything about it, ie, doctor and prescription antifungal. So more frequent cleaning/changing, regular use of zinc oxide cream (zincofax or the like) and the parent should make sure she is thoroughly dry after baths.

I have never heard of the immunity to antifungal creams... it is different from antibiotics, and as far as I know, requires a prescription.

As far as the mom telling you before, don't stress about that, it is common enough that for me, it's not something you'd think of unless you had specifically asked.

As for the strong pee smell, that actually sounds more like a bladder infection. Yeast infection leaves red rash with spots.

Oh and yeast infections are not contagious so there's no reason for exclusion, just good hygiene.

Yes, yeast infection would be showing symptoms in the diaper area. Red sores, that possibly bleed and/or a clumpy white discharge.

If it is in fact a yeast infection, the kid should be serves a very low sugar diet (including fruit and juice), as the yeast thrives on sugar.

But I also would be concerned about a urinary tract infection if it is really strong smelling urine. These types of infections can be serious if the infection spreads to the bladder.

I wouldn't be letting the dad brush off this problem either way, you need to talk about what they have done in the past to fix the problem so you can work together to clear it up. I have personally dealt with both these issues and they don't just clear up without special treatment.

Could perhaps be concentrated pee from not taking in enough fluids at times, or if he drank a lot of juice. Some kids here smell like they're peeing apple juice in the morning after they've had lots of it at home for breakfast. Maybe he eats some sugary foods at home which can contribute to yeast overgrowth. I'm assuming he's not in cloth which can have an odour all on their own.

Yeah, it would smell like ammonia if it was a cloth diaper that was stinking.

I didnt even know a boy could get a yeast infection. I would freak right out if there was white discharge from my boys penis.

lol, ok Emma H, but apparently its really true! Good to know! like I said, I am pretty good at keeping calm about most things, but if I saw that before now (now that I know what it could be) I would likely panic! lol

Actually, yes, boys can get a yeast infection too, so far as I've seen, it's just when they are in diapers and it involves the spots and rash. If this particular child is a girl, then the discharge is vaginal? There's no emoticon for cringing. I personally have never seen this. It is concerning me a bit. I think maybe some Googling is also in order. Definitely a trip to the doctor is in order.

The red bumps, bleeding can come later if the yeast infection isn't treated promptly.
