Yesterday, DCdad drops off kid and mentions she has a bit of a runny nose. Well 10 minutes later her nose is running like a faucet, and she is sneezing and snot is going everywhere. Well i was wiping her nose, swear to you, every 10 min. It was clear so i took a wait and see approach. She seemed kind of 'out of it' by mid morning- tired and quiet and just not herself. We went for a walk and cried or moped all the way to Tim Hortons and back (15 min walk both ways with the littles) because she wanted to sit in the stroller, she was tired, her legs hurt, etc. I have a sit and stand with an 18 mo old, her (3 y.o) and an almost 4 yr old so i had the 2 older ones take turns sitting. She was a touch warm but didn't register a fever and her cheeks were flushed. she barely touched her lunch and cried because she wanted to go to bed. I put her down for her nap and she woke after an hour and she had 100.5 fever. I text dad to tell him and she fell asleep again, so he came to get her after nap time.

He texted me last night to tell me she doesn't have a fever. I know what he is getting at, he wants to bring her back today. I told him to tell me how she is in the morning because if she isn't well then she should stay home. This morning, he says she has no fever, no runny nose and happy. Then sends me a picture of his thermometer with a temp of 94.7 (odd, isn't that low?- last time that happened to me, my thermo was broken and had to get a new one. good thing i did because my kid actually HAD a 103.6 F fever) Anyhow her temp registered 98.5 on my thermo. Then he tells me that he might have to stop by around 11 to give her more medicine.  I told him if she is sick and needs meds to keep a fever down then she needs to stay home and reminded him of sick policy and dose and drop. He says the meds are homeopathic for her runny nose and congestion....i told him i will monitor her closely but if her temp goes up or if she is not well like yesterday, then i will get in touch and she has to go home.

Grrr seriously. I hate when people push their luck, and i hate when parents do that to DCP's. They know the rules yet still try to 'run one by' on us. They know the policies, they get a new handbook ever year!

You are being too nice. You aren't standing your ground. When a child develops a fever while at daycare, when the parents pick up I tell them (let's say it's monday) "well I guess I won't see Sally until Wednesday then because she won't be within the 24 hours to come back tomorrow. Hope she gets some rest tomorrow and do let me know if she will be coming Wednesday". I dont care if the child is feeling better on Tuesday, if she was sick monday she needs to be HEALTHY for a FULL 24 hours before she comes back.

And when a child develops a fever right around nap time, this raises a huge red flag for me because it's usually about the time that the meds wear off. You have no way to prove it for sure but I would be willing to bet that they dosed and dropped.

Some of the homeopathic cough and cold ones clearly state they are fever reducers too.

If a child is sent home from daycare they are required to remain home the next day to allow for the 24 hours. :)

A child must be able to actively participate the the day's activities. I have had 2 with bad colds, lots of snot, sneezing, coughing etc but no fever and still active. But no real reason for them to not be here unfortunately

Dcdad and I will absolutely be having a chat at pick up for sure. Maybe I wasn't as strict as I should have been this time but I won't be doing that again.

If you don't enforce your boundaries, you can't expect parents to follow rules.

If it were me, I would have said when Dad texted last night that she might not have a fever now but did earlier and the policy requires full 24 hours excluded from daycare. End of discussion. Had they showed up this morning, they would have been turned away.

In term of homeopathic meds, I not care. My policy is 24 hours without the use of meds to hide symptoms. My contract also state that I have the final word in determining if child fit for day care. Since this child clearly not well yesterday, she not able to fully participate in day's activities so that mean she need be home.

24 hr exclusion period here. I show them my thermometer reading at pickup. I don't allow naturopathic remedies or any meds here, as you never know what they've had or if there could be a reaction to it.

38.5...Child should have been sent home immediately, this is a low grade fever. Also, a runny nose doesn't just miraculously stop. I call BS!

37.0C is normal. = 98.6F

34.8C is hypothermia = 94.7F

anything below 95F is considered hypothermia.

The low temp is obviously bogus. As for normal. The normal range is considered 36-38 because it differs for everyone, that is why I make a point of taking every child's temp so I can establish their norm for when they are ill. I found this out when I worked in the ER many years ago. Also I run low, so if I am 37 I have a low grade and 38, I am running a high fever. My norm is 35.8-36 on average. I can't take cold and flu meds because of this as it plummets my temp into the 34 range and I have to be rushed to hospital :glomp:

Thanks, that's a good idea. And now that you mention it, I run a bit lower than 37C too. For daycare purposes, I consider 38C fever enough to send the child home.

We're actually regulated on this too. 10yrs ago, when I opened, the regulation said 37.5C, then a couple of years later, they upped it to 38C. As of last year, they put it up again so now the gov't considers 38.5 to be fever. I personally thinks that's a bit unfair to a lot of kids who run cooler and so the higher temp is reeally high.
