    Would you consider this?

While I was out today I was approached by a lady (I know her but only by face really...our kids go to the same school/bus) about doing after school care for her son who is going into grade 4. The kids are going to a new school and right now there is no after school program set so her son won't have anywhere to go for a half hour-45 min until his mom gets home. Her friend is watching him right now but she won't be able to any more after Sept. She asked me if I still had my day home and if this would be something I'd be interested in. She doesn't have all the details ironed out yet for this coming school year but wanted to know if I'd be an option for her. This boy, from what I've seen of him, is very well behaved, polite, etc. and would only be here for about 45 minutes at most after school and possibly on pd days (which are usually Fridays or Mondays once a month). I'm not sure about school breaks though.

I have 5 kids in care (3 f/t and 2 p/t) and I have 1 f/t space open that I want to fill still. I don't normally do b/a school care because I can't tolerate school kids for very long and prefer working with the under 5 group BUT, I'm seriously considering this kid. I could still fill my f/t space I have open AND take this kid as bonus $ and the way my dc kid's schedules are, I would never be over my numbers. It would be an extra $325-350/month I could throw into my savings. We're planning a trip to Disney World next December with my parents so we need to save a crapload of money for it and other things we want to get next year and this would really help with that. Am I crazy for considering this? Would you consider taking this kid?

I'm not really sure what I would charge her. I just figured it would be about $325-350/month. My late fee is $10/half hour so I figure if I charge her $15/day and then $40 for the pd day, that would be fair...wouldn't it? Is $15/day for after school care to much?

Sounds fair to me and if you have the space are going to be at the school anyway and the kids is a 'good fit' why not?
Children construct their own intelligence. The adult must provide activities and context, but most of all must be able to listen. Children need proof that adults believe in them. Their three great desires are to be listened to, to understand, and to demonstrate that they are exactly what we expect."

I would do it. It's only 45 mins. max. Especially, if the kid is well behaved and polite. You don't have to do anything apart from giving him a snack. Go for it. And as you said extra money would come handy.

Not going to be at the school. He will walk to my house from the bus stop that is at the end of my street. I don't do any kind of school run unless it is to pick up my own kid...which never happens anyway

I would NOT, I like you was approached by a local mom, that her girl same age as mine went to the same school etc.. I too thought hey why not, she seems fine. Mom was willing to pay decent $. Defently needed the extra $. However I like you, was not and did not want to do before or afterschool care. I prefer the younger toddler age, they are all on the same routine.

I soon regreted fully taking this dcg on even though it was only an hour and a half everyday. She was not the best child after she got comfortable with her souroundings, and she defently did not know how to behave around the babies and toddlers in my care, despight her mothers statement that she was. To the point of grabbing toys out of the little ones hands so she could play with it. I eventually made her and my daughter play in my daughters room to avoid the younger children. Pro-d-days were horrible, and holidays. It was way more work trying to keep the older ones in check with behaviour and noise. She had become a bad influence on my daughter's as well. And just recently she gave me 2 weeks notice to pull her daughter out for the entire month of August with not paying, and expects me to care for her again in September, lets just say she will be getting a surprise when I give her 2 weeks notice that I wont continue care this September.

Of course this was my experience with doing something simular to you, however you may have better luck. In the end for me, I never made any extra $ with all the extras food and crafts and activities that I had, and it was more stress than it was worth.

I would do it. Good pay for the amount of time and I would give him a little snack too. Nice that you don't have to pick him up!

Ya, but see...if I found that after a month or 2 it wasn't working for me, I'd get rid of them. I have no issues with that and I wouldn't continue doing it if I was unhappy with the situation. I don't put up with unruly children or inconsiderate parents. The mother is fully aware that there will be no one here his age to play with and I don't expect my kids to play with daycare kids and keep them entertained...that's not their job. I don't need this kid at all so it's not a loss to me if it doesn't work out.
