    Rash

I have a little guy here (14 months) who developed an awful diaper rash last week. It was bright red, all around his genital area, but not his bum, not bumpy at all, just red and irritated. After a couple days it started peeling and looked like it was getting better. Now it's all red again and he's got a few red bumps as well in that area. Once when I was changing him today, it was actually bleeding a little bit.

My own child never had a diaper rash, and I haven't had a daycare kid with one this bad either. His parents have tried a few different creams for it, but it doesn't seem to be going away. He's had this rash for at least a week. It's definitely making him cranky and uncomfortable.

Is this a 'normal' diaper rash? Should I be concerned? Should I ask them to have it checked by a doctor or anything?

Sounds like a yeast infection. Ask his parents to try some clotrimazole. You can buy it over the counter at Shoppers or Walmart or anywhere else where there is a pharmacy.

My son used to get awful diaper rashes, pretty much like what you are describing. His skin was so sensitive! I'd agree that trying the clotrimazole is a good idea as it might be a yeast infection. Also- air out that bum!!! The only thing that ever seemed to help was lots of air time before cream!

def have the parents get it checked, may help along with airing out and cream to change diaper alot more frequently, I would also wonder if it could have anything to do with diet, what does he drink (or doesnt he drink, sometimes urine can become very acidic which is very hard on tender skin) consider the brand of diaper as well, some of the diapers or wipes wont help. OOOH! another thing to keep in mind is, when there is a diaper rash, try to avoid wipes all together...use a quick rinse in the bathroom sink to wash the bottom. Whatever is in MOST wipes can be very irritating to sore skin, making it worse.

Has he been on antibiotics recently? That can cause a yeast infection. I don't give advice to my dc parents unless asked with the exception of always telling them to give their kids probiotics, especially when they are taking antibiotics.

He hasn't been on antibiotics, no.

He went off formula a few weeks ago, but he had been drinking milk for a couple of months before that, so I don't think it's his diet.

No change in the brand of diapers or wipes.

I will mention to them the possibility of a yeast infection. Thanks.

Why haven't the parents taken care of this? Why aren't they providing cream or an explanation for you? Why haven't they taken him to the doctor? Those would be the questions in my mind. You are not the parent and therefore not responsible primarily so ask them what they are going to provide to treat the problem for relief for their son and don't worry any more. I don't put any creams on a child unless they have been bought and provided by the parents. Some creams if used on the wrong type of rash will only do more harm than good.

Momof4, his parents have provided cream, like I said, they have tried a few different ones, but they don't seem to be helping. But yes, they send the cream with him for me to use on him.

Well that's good, but a zinc oxide cream for instance will not clear up a yeast infection. That's my point. These parents should be taking their child to be checked by the doctor if it's so bad he's bleeding and it isn't clearing up but getting worse. Be strong and insist!

A few tips...

Always ensure that your child receives quality care by taking the time to investigate the provider and by asking for references! We simply cannot verify the claims of every daycare provider.
