    Coyote attacks in area

So, after several nature walks over the last couple of weeks (with my daycare children & my own) on wooded trails near my home my heart stopped when I read of reported coyote attacks in our area. The fact that someone is usually, screaming (happily), yelling (echoes!), or singing (guilty, that's usually me) in our group...probably scares away any creature within earshot. Still scary. No more traipsing through the woods for us for awhile.
    Children are great imitators.
So give them something great to imitate.

Nature is both beautiful to behold and fierce to cross for sure ... did they say if the attack was during the day or early morning/late night when coyotes are more likely out hunting?
Children construct their own intelligence. The adult must provide activities and context, but most of all must be able to listen. Children need proof that adults believe in them. Their three great desires are to be listened to, to understand, and to demonstrate that they are exactly what we expect."

My parents live in Cobourg. Coyotes have been a problem for some time there. Scary stuff! I'm always afraid, when visiting, to take my dogs out for their evening piddle as apparently they're quite aggressive. I think my heart would completely stop to see one while out with kids! We had them at my old location as well. I could hear them in my yard at night. I lived in a wooded area so it's not really a stretch, but still.....ugh.....

. That is a good point! No, the reports do not specify time of day.

Eeeeeeek!! That is terrifying... we have coyotes around all the time. The other day, one was in my backyard, not once but twice during broad daylight. He/she was digging up all the crabapples underneath the snow. Oddly enough, surrounded by birds and not attacking them. Vegetarian coyote??
I have always been told that coyotes are more scared of us than we are of them. But I don't let my kids get complacent about them, either!!

It's very sad that people have encroached on the natural habitat of so many animals so that it makes them look bad. The animals are just doing what they do and we have to remember that when they look at us they may see a food source. Staying safe is our responsibility. I feel terrible when I see a news story that make the animals look like the bad guys when really, it's us.

Sorry you can't go out and enjoy the woods as much, but you are smart to be making lots of noise and maybe some pepper spray might be a good thing to throw in your backpack? Or a loud whistle or horn to scare an animal?
