    Trick or treating crazyness!

Parents: if you have to haul your kids' candy in a cooler on wheels or a suitcase or a trekking backpack....don't you think maybe, just maybe, it means they have WAY TOO MUCH CANDY?!!!
Just had to say that after taking my little ones out to trick or treat tonight and witnessing all of the above Personally, when the bag is getting too heavy for my 2 and 4 year olds to carry, that means they have too much and we are done...I would not be carrying it for them and especially not have them dump it into something on wheels and continue on...come on! Candy is a big part of Halloween, but your kids do not need a mountain of it big enough to climb. Why was I the only one stopping with my kids to admire decorations along the way? People have gone to considerable effort and my kids really enjoyed stopping to spend time looking at the displays...it doesn't have to be all about the candy!

WOW! That is pretty amazing. I totally agree. Kids do not need that much candy. We take our kids up one side of our street then the other. Most houses on our street do not hand out candy, so they maybe go to 10-15 houses. I think that is more than enough at their age (3.5 and 20 months). Plus, I eat most of their candy anyways....

    Children are great imitators.
So give them something great to imitate.

    Seriously ... suitcases on wheels???
Children construct their own intelligence. The adult must provide activities and context, but most of all must be able to listen. Children need proof that adults believe in them. Their three great desires are to be listened to, to understand, and to demonstrate that they are exactly what we expect."

Oh my ! Thats way too much ! I did not witness anything like that and we only got one street done. All the houses where giving out candy so the bags were almost full when I decided ok, it's enough, did you have fun ? I can only imagine however how much candy some may have gotten if they did get all the street done !
What I don't like seeing is very small children getting to run from one side of the street to the next. I mean I know it's halloween but it's never a bad time to teach safety rules ? We did one side then came back on the other and always always stay close to me or Daddy ... is that so hard or is it just me ?

We had about 70 kids last night and all but two 10 yr old boys were wonderful. We had little chats with the kids who were super polite wishing us Happy Hallowe'em and giving big thank you's. The weather here didn't dampen their spirits and we gave out extra for their effort on such a miserable night. The boys were wearing animal costumes, so after giving them their treats, they asked for more for the animal. I just told them a thank you would be nice instead of asking for more. Jeez

Ok, I admit it, with my children we used to use pillow cases and went back home to dump them when they got heavy and went out again. But then my youngest child always wanted to quit after about 5-6 houses and said she had enough candy and we had to nudge her along. It was so horrible last night though that I'm surprised they didn't quit earlier.

Uh, yeah.... waaaayyy too much candy!! I will admit to bringing a larger bucket in the van, because the little ones my kiddos use fill up after 2-3 bags of chips/popcorn. But when that one is full; we are DONE!!

Maybe it's because I grew up in a rural area and we had to literally walk kilometers in the pitch dark with falshlights between each house....we could never have gotten that much candy even if we kept at it all night! But it was sooooo much fun...going out in the dark and scaring each other....we made our own costumes...pretty much nobody bought them. We planned our costumes for months in advance and put so much time and effort and thought into them...I think as most things, we have lost the fun of Halloween to commercialism...we buy or kids costumes that require zero thought or imagination from them...then we take them out in suburbia from house to houes until they have five mountains of candy and it is all about how much candy you can get and how quickly. I just find it sad and backwards.

my husband takes them--- but mostly he eats the candy and takes it to the firehouse- he brought the wagon for candy dumps though, the kids had a great time and think they are doing something great by getting candy for the firefighters.
