Starting to feel at home...
Friday crying
Hi ladies,
I've been wanting to ask you a question for a while, so here we go! I have a little 2.5 yo girl in my Dayhome, she has been with me for 1.5 month now and was always with mommy before. EVERY friday is the same thing... around 10:30-11:00 she starts crying... and is really grumpy for the rest of the day. She wont play with me, wont play with the other kids... only thing she wants to do is watch tv, or sit by the window and wait for mommy to pick her up. I am a bit confused as to what I am supposed to do with her... should I let her sit by the window and play with the other kids.. ( I tried ''forcing'' her to stay with the group but the meltdown I get from it is not worth it..) I spoke to her mom about it last week and she said that it was totally fine, it was probably just because she is not used to it yet... But I still feel terrible about it. Feel like I'm doing something wrong or that she is not having fun.... ( pregnancy hormones taking over here...)
What can I do about this? she doesn't even want to play her favourite game?!?!

Mommy has probably reminded her in the morning just one more day of daycare and then it will be a mommy day. So basically the child is just hanging out waiting for it to be a mommy day.

Starting to feel at home...
Maybe, what is really odd is that she was in a great mood this morning, we talked about Christmas trees since mine was put up last night her she will be making hers tomorrow... after that we painted a Christmas tree... and she started crying half way trough the painting. Its Hard to see her this sad since she is usualy in a very good mood... ( except on Fridays!)

Euphoric !
If she is fine every other day than I would be wondering what do they do on Thursday NIGHT?
Does she have an extra curricular activity like ballet or swimming or something that disrupts bedtime routine ~ could be she is just over tired as a result?
Also Playfelt theory would be another to investigate what is mom saying on Friday mornings at drop off that is DIFFERENT that might cause the behaviour?
I know it is hard to see kids sad ... but sometimes giving them the space and permission to BE SAD is the best thing we can do for them ... if she seems to need some quiet alone time I would offer her a safe place to have that if it does not impact the safety and enjoyment of the other groups activities than IMO there is no harm in her doing something different at that time of day?
Hopefully just 'ignoring' it will make the behavior disappear quicker?
Children construct their own intelligence. The adult must provide activities and context, but most of all must be able to listen. Children need proof that adults believe in them. Their three great desires are to be listened to, to understand, and to demonstrate that they are exactly what we expect."

My first thoughts were that she might be a little hungry or tired at that time of the day? I have a 4 year old little girl who always misses her Dad and every once in a while she cries and says she misses him. She's a real Daddy's girl. And I have a 1 year old girl who cries 'I want Mommy' any time she gets upset or a booboo of any kind. But I hug them both and start singing songs or pull out the finger puppets or their favourites, colouring, puzzles, playdo, sorting pompoms, scissors and paper, the simple things work on children!
Don't take it personally and congrats on your baby-to-be!
