Wow what an article. Not sure I like the two subjects being together in one article although obviously relevent. It's just they both provoke such great, but different, emotions in me. The Sandy incident is devastating and everyone involved deserves a medal. The children who returned safely to their homes after that terrible day are truly blessed to have had such passionate and caring teachers who would have clearly given their lives to save them and thats exactly what some of them did. I always fear for my children and I don't think it's ever going to go away, but knowing their are teachers who care so much is something. Thank goodness my kids school doors have a video intercom and are all locked. But after something like this it does little to reassure me anymore.
As for the strike...well I'd take the teachers coffee on any given day. Their job is extremely difficult and they spend so much time with our kids that they are molding the basis of the coming generations and for the "great" teachers I am eternally greatful. That being said, If the teachers want us parents to not be bitter, then the union needs to take the gag order off the true reasons behind the strikes. I am of the understanding that the teachers are not allowed to discuss any particulars with the general public. Yes we all have a teacher we know or a friend of a friend who has told us stuff, but it doesn't make it true, accurate or really tell us the whole complete story of things so we can not fully understand. How about they sit down and explain it in detail to parents and then perhaps we would have a greater appreciation for the whys of this situation. I don't want to begrudge teachers any of their rights but with what little "facts" people know about it, don't expect people to be super understanding. They're not really giving us much else to go on.
The school incident was a tragedy and I hope never to experience this myself, but if I did I would want such loving and fighting teachers protecting my children. The families will forever hold them in their hearts I am sure. My heart goes out to all those lost and the families left behind. RIP
