Little Houdini

I have a newer 12 month dcb. He's a little Houdini. It doesn't matter how well I put on his mittens, he can escape them in the blink of an eye! I'm constantly putting them back on. It's funny how determined they can be when it comes to not wearing their winter gear sometimes.

In centre care when we had children like this we asked parental permission to use DUCT TAPE to adhere the mitten to the coat so they could not pull them off ~ same with their boots.

I had a little one that aside from my efforts I could never keep her mitts on in outside play, so I asked Mom for a sweatshirt i could use for the winter, then sewed her mitts to the end of the sleaves. worked great! was a little tough to get on every day...but she NEVER got them off outside again. I thought if I could patten that I would have become a millionaire!

They also make mittens with sleeves called elbows i think, they work great too!

Cool ~ I think the premise is awesome for those Daycarewhisper ~ but there are no thumbs in those

So how is a child suppose to engage in outdoor fun without thumbs ... one of the things I hate most about the infant snowsuits that come with 'mitts' attached like that is that they never have thumbs and the kids get all pissy outside cause they cannot pick anything up or hold onto things?

The only thing they couldn't do would be to climb ladders or scale heights. Other than that they adjust immediately to them. Takes a few minutes. As long as it doesn't require a tight grip there is enough room in the mitted part of it for them to completely clasp anything. I have never used them for scaling ladders or slides so I don't have any experience with that.

A one year old isn't going to be climbing Mt Everest in them so it will work WONDERFULLY. I don't do any climbing activities in my day care indoor or out so I can use them outside for anything we do. I've had kids be able to play Barbies with the mitted sweatshirts on.... they adjust THAT fast and are able to do that level of fine motor.

Also if you look at this picture you can see the very bottom of the mitt is fanned out wider than the wrist. That's done intentionally so they can fully extend their fingers to the max... there's plenty of room and give in the cloth to do a full grip.
