    Giving my notice

decided that its time to give my notice to the family with the early start. Do you have a standard letter? Its been many many years since I've had to do this any help on wording would be appreciated. The reason I'm giving is the early morning and how the long day is affecting my ability to do my job the way the I want and that t is also affecting the family as well.

    thanks

what I like to do when I have to turn away a family is try to find another daycare willing to interview them. this way they see that you are not trying to leave them hanging. Its also great for referrals. they wont be bitter and tell other families in the area the negative. They
d be more apt to say that you didn't work out but that you helped get them into a place that could help them.

I had to turn away a family a week after they started as all my kids were older and having an infant didn't make sense with the completely different needs as the rest of my group. I got them interviews at a couple different daycares in the area and then sat the family down (IN PERSON) and explained to them the issues of why I could no longer care for them.

I really believe in sitting down with a family face to face (its really hard and awkward) but giving a letter to someone you've come to knoww so well and whose children you have loved seems so cold

Here is what I used when I terminated a client becuase of long hours.

    Dear Client

When I first started doing home daycare, it was with the stipulation that I would still be able to be there for my kids. We have been finding that my hours are starting to interfere with homework, dinner and general care of my own children. Therefore, I can no longer provide care past 5:30 to your family. Effective May 1st, my work hours will be 7 am to 5:30 pm.

Due to this, and financial reasons, I am unable to continue to care for "suzy".

She is a wonderful girl and I will miss having her around. I wish you all the best in finding a caregiver that meets all of your needs. Please feel free to give my name and phone number to another caregiver if they require a reference.

"suzy's" last day of care will be April 30th. (on a side note, I gave them over a months notice)

    Thank you for your understanding

The financial part was because she was part time, I really needed to fill with a full time child. I hope this helps. You're going to feel so good when this is all done and over with.

thanks for your thoughts cadillac. They dont live anywhere near me actually and to be honest, the early mornings is only 1 issue. this mom acts as if she's above me and constantly spouts out little digs to try and put me in my place. I prefer not to get into that as part of my reason for terminating so that things stay positive during the 3 weeks that she will still be here. I will tell them face to face but i doubt she will appreciate me taking the time to find her someone. I'll give it some thought and maybe see if I can find a couple people who do the early morning.

    Dear xxxxxxx
The purpose of this letter is to inform you that as of (date) my operating hours will be changing to xxx am to xxx pm. With the current hours I am having a hard time finding balance between work responsibilities and family responsibilities. I realize that the new hours are not going to fit with your work schedule and therefore am giving you ample notice for you to find alternative care. The last day if available care for xxxxx will be xxxxx.

    Thank you for your understanding,
    Gramma

Its funny because I have so many people that call on me to write letters for them but when I have to do it for myself I second guess every word. thanks so much for the ideas. I love the line about having a hard time finding balance with work and family responsibilities.

Stupid B**** I read some other posts after and realized that this lady was a tool. Since then I have regreted my 'nice way to do it remark' please feel free to give her a curtly worded letter and put it in the kids back pack . . . and then TEXT her that there is a letter for her an hour later. HMPH!
