If they start climbing out, its no longer safe for them so I move them to a nap mat. Takes a few days of reminders that they have to lie still and sleep ie no getting up and playing but then they are great.

have you tried duct tape just kidding. i agree with monkey mama, you need to move them out of the play yard. Reminds me of a little guy I had many years ago. He was 17 months or so and had just started with me. I put him to be in my bedroom and came down to go about my lunch etc. I heard something and walked out into the hall only to see him walking down the stairs with a can of coke from my hubbys bedside table. the feeling of dread that went through me. he had spilled the pop all over the carpet but luckily didnt get into anything els. at pick up, mom says oh ya, he's been doing that for awhile. UGGH are you kidding me, would have been nice to know ahead of time.

that happened to me once literally. As soon as I heard unusual movement in the nap room I was there is a flash catching the escapee in the act on the other side of the playpen. I gave him a very stern voice (for safety violation) and stern face and he never did it again. I quess my sudden appearance and the tone of my voice scared the bejeezes out of him.

Super awesome that they started doing it at the same time!! LoL
When my little guys start trying to do this and I feel like they still need to be in a playpen; I will put them down for a nap and either stay in the room or leave the door open a crack so I can watch/listen. AS SOON as they make a move to climb out, "NO. It's naptime." Lay them back down. Stern face and voice.
Sometimes you only need to do it once, sometimes it will feel like a thousand times!! But, in my experience, they figure out that there is no gymnastics involved in naptime.

mom-in-alberta- I don't feel like my daycare kids are ready for cots. I have now installed a video monitor-to help me keep an eye on them at nap time.

    Thanks everyone!

I had one that did this and when he climbed out I swooped in with my mean face/voice and said "no climbing out" and I put him back in the play pen and I kept doing this till he got it. Even if nap time was over I still put him back in for five minutes so that he understood that he was not to get out till I came to get him. Took about two weeks and he was 22 months at he time.

A few tips...

Always ensure that your child receives quality care by taking the time to investigate the provider and by asking for references! We simply cannot verify the claims of every daycare provider.
