I have those same hand blisters and am currently being tested for celiac (gluten allergy) as well as having an allergy test to see if it is just a wheat allergy. Eczema is usually a direct link to an allergy of some sort. The poor thing, I know how itchy, painful and debilitating it is. Could you possibly mention this information to the parents? There is now a blood test to screen for celiac before doing the biopsy.

If the doctor said it's viral, it could be Hand Foot and Mouth disease. My kids had it last spring and it took 3 doctors to get it diagnosed properly. The first two also said it was "viral", but weren't specific. if it is viral, that means it is contagious. Did the child have a fever before the blisters broke out? Sore throat?
I didn't know excema could cause blisters...this thread has been informative in a disgusting way

DaycareLady, I will be curious to hear what they end up saying for you I have celiac, although never had skin issues..... keep in mind, that the screening test is not always accurate. I know of multiple people, including myself, who had negative or inconclusive bloodwork, but positive biopsies. And countless more who are not "celiac" but have adverse reactions to gluten. As my Dr says, clinical trials are often far more conclusive than any lab results! Good luck!

I did ask mom if she noticed any triggers, and she just spoke of him scratching making it worse. And she has similar skin and says it just "acts up" more at times.

I, personally feel that there is a food trigger. When our body can't handle something it can show in many different ways. The skin talking like that is saying something more than just what's showing. If it were my child they would be on an elimination diet, for sure. But, that's my own beliefs.....can't force that upon anyone.
