I started a new 18 month old boy today (he will come Wednesday and Friday 730-500). He doesn't speak (only screams when he try to communicate), he has a cold, he doesnt eat, and has never been in daycare or played with other kids. He has been at my house since 730am and hasn't a drop of water or any food at all. He has cried since 930am non stop. It's really disrupting the flow of our day. We went outside to play in the snow and he only wanted to be picked up. I put him down for a nap at 1215 and the quiet is so nice.
Please give me suggestions on how to get through the rest of the day and the days to come! Thanks

It's only his first day...all of what you described sounds normal. It will take time for him to adjust and especially if he is only part-time. When I have a new child starting, I don't plan any activities for those first few days and just concentrate on getting the child integrated and getting them to feel secure. It sounds like at least he is napping...that is a huge bonus already! Hang in there!

You are almost through the first day - it should never be this bad again. So, remind yourself that each time should get better. I agree with Sunnydays that you shoudl probably expect to cater mostly to the newbie the first few times he comes because it might be long, crying days like t hat for a while.
The sooner you can try to find songs to sing and calm him or toys the better. He might also be really sweet by next week when his cold is gone. Kids - especially boys are so much harder when they have colds. The "man cold" starts early. lol

Yes, I do that to, first week I am more around the newbie and its more free time at play time. I have a new baby too and shes pretty good but still need loads of attention, plus I have the older kids for march break so I try so hard to do more so they dont get bored, but I am EXHAUSTED.

Oh good luck, newbie hell is one of the stresses in our job. Patience, consistency and a bubblebath and relaxation every evening will help you get through, but we've all been there time after time.

I have only been open since July and all the kids I have were so well behaved and didn't have any issues starting here. For this little boy it's his first time being away from his mom for any amount of time. It makes it harder not knowing what he is needs as he doesn't speak at all! The poor 6 year old That j have all day for mzrch break kept asking when he was going to leave cause she couldnt stand the crying lol. I went to the gym tonight to help distress after a very long crying filled day. Friday night after leaves I have a feeling it will be an alcohol type of drink lol.
