What about plastic dinosaurs from the dollar store and tie it in with a movie day and watch ice age.

Would be fun in the summer as a just look idea to put a set of prizes in or a container with a clue to where the prizes are and then set the block in the sun to melt and they get to keep going over to check how it is going, poke at it to see how soft etc. Might want to melt one on a weekend to time just how long it takes and adjust the thickness accordingly to how long you will be outside.
