Didn't Take her to the Doctors

    Hello Everyone! (Again!)

On Tuesdays I had dcp come and pick up dcg who was screaming as it was out of control. I had suggested that she have her checked over by the doctor because she had an ear infection just a 2 weeks prior and I was concerned she was in pain from it (or something else) When I asked the next day if there was any diagnosis dcm said they couldn't get an appointment. So the screaming has continued and she hasn't napped at all for the last 3 days, nor has she been to the doctor. I looked in her ear today and there is a LOT of wax build up and it looks like an orange fluid has drained from her ear(s).....I'm starting to think that her ear infection has not cleared up. Seeing as I had already suggested that she get checked out by a doctor, should I still be pushing the issue with parents? I strongly think she is suffering from a persistent ear infection which is causing her screaming.Should I email the parents or talk to them in person even though I already asked that they take her? I don't want to overstep any boundaries.

My illness policy states that "discharge from the eyes or ears is not permitted" I think orange stuff oozing out of her ear counts. There are evening walk-in Clinics in your area ... No? I would tell them she needs to see a dr because her screaming is uncharacteristic .... Is she not screaming at home??

If they can't get an appointment, they need to take her to a walk-in clinic. Stuff draining from the ears is a bad sign. I would get them to come and pick her up.

Yes her parents had said that the screaming continues while at home. There is a walk in clinic right down the street from my daycare so I think I'll suggest that maybe they take her there, or to another one. Poor dcg, it's been such a rough few weeks for her

I am at a loss as to why parents would not take their screaming child to a dr especially when the child just got over an ear infection ..... So often the ear infection comes right back .... Sometimes the dose of medication was too low sometimes the duration was long long enough .... Maybe they missed a few doses .... Maybe the child is prone to them .... But good grief take the child to see a dr. At the very least toucan rule things out. If its not an ear infection and there is nothing else obvious ... Maybe it's a food allergy.

I would call to have them pick up as well. It is really none of my business what they do with their own time, but my policies state as well that any discharge goes home.

I would simply clal the parent and let them know that you've noticed a discharge coming from the childs ears and she is unconsolable. She needs to be picked up, will it be her or will be be arranging for one of her emergency contacts to do it.

If she comes back tomorrow with no solution and still has the issue I'd refuse her care.

Unfortunately my policies don't stipulate anything about discharge (but I'm going to change it).....so I wonder if I can refuse care if its still draining? Dcm responded very quickly to my email and is taking dcg to the doctor shortly, and then said she would bring her back.

Bring her back? I don't think so unless the doctor comes up with some miracle cure to stop the discharge and the screaming. Child is not well and needs to be home. She wouldn't be coming back this day if it were me.

Unbelievable. Crazy that a parent would let their child suffer like that! she should not be coming back today, and I would request that the doctor put it in WRITING that she is ok, as I would not trust the parents at this point. You need to cover yourself in case something bad happened...what if there was hearing loss or something severe down the road and they ask you what you did about it? Get a doctor's NOTE.

She has just returned from the doctors. I didn't even think to ask for a note! Shoot! Doctor says its just wax build up and she is fine. All clear. Mom thinks the screaming is behavioral, dcg is just testing our limits, says she is going to look into it this weekend. So now that an ear infection or ruptured ear drum has been "ruled out" I'm back to square one with the screaming. Ahhhhhhh!
