I have the cots and the stack together so they really don't take up much space...possibly less than the mats. I love them as they are really comfy and the kids are off the floor (my kids sleep in the basement and the floor is pretty cool).

The downside is the size whereas the crib mattresses even work well with 4-5 year olds due to width and length. By the time you add a pillow you lose space.
