Potty Training Policies?

Hello!

I would love to know what other providers state as their potty training policy? I have a few little ones entering into the time when their parents want to start and I think my current policy might leave me cleaning up a lot of pee! Help!

Great question Daycare123. I am going to be needing the same advice soon. I came from centre care. We "aided" the parents who began the potty training at home. We had a policy that they come in pull-ups until they could consistently have a straight week of no accidents without being prompted by a teacher to use the washroom.
I still found that even though I was a very busy teacher there, it took a lot of time to get these kids on the potty unless they were ready.
I opened my home daycare just 1.5 years ago and have some 2 year olds who will be potty training soon. I am going to work on my own son while on vacation. I don't think it is too much to ask the parents to start and help out in the potty training process. I would prefer them in pull ups just to save my carpets but I know that is just not as effective so I would love to know what other providers have done in the past that works too

DITTO. And if there are accidents we start over again with a one month containment. I can't take care of all the children and get through all of our activities and clean up horrible messes from my rugs or furniture.

I am happy to help toilet training children as soon as they understand and are progressing well at home. But I make it clear to the parents that it's their job to teach this skill to their child and I'll back them up all I can and do things their way as much as possible but my rules apply at my daycare and if we are outside for 3 hours in the morning at a playpark there is no bathroom.

I don't have a policy, but as long as a parent has had a weekend at home of trying to potty train then I will keep going with it for the week and see how things stand at the end of the week. I don't require pull-ups, I actually prefer not to use them, but I have all hardwood and linoleum floors in my home so accidents are not usually a big deal to clean up.
I really believe that if a child is ready to train then that week is plenty of time. If not then I would suggest to the parents that we give it a break and try again in a few months. If a child was still having accidents at the end of the week and the parents insisted on continuing with potty training then I would go with the pull-ups.

I am one month with dry pullup and child must be telling me when they need to go and not just me putting them on. I will help them with clothing as it isn't their fault if mom doesn't dress them properly and saves on them getting the back of something wet and having to change everything.

One of the big things for me is no matter what method the parents are using at home I do not do rewards at daycare. First because I don't believe in rewarding a child for something that is just a part of growing up, second because it can cause issues with the others in care, and third parents tend to use candies and that is something we don't pass out at daycare on a daily basis. What I will do is praise the child and remind them we will tell mommy at pickup that they peed in the potty and then it is up to the parent to reward the child when they get home for what they did that day leaving the proces of rewards up to the parent.
