Personally, I think it is more professional and mature to do it one-on-one. I have the letter written, give it to them, short explanation and that's it. Good Luck! Terminating is never fun no matter what the reasoning.

Definitely wait to give a letter along with a face-to-face explanation. It won't be easy, but it is way more professional.

I agree with monkeymama and AmandaKDT. I give a letter and a short explanation face to face. Its a hard thing to do but very professional.

Do it in person ..... Tell the parent that there have been issues (whatever your reasoning is for terming) and that you feel it would be best for them to source out new arrangements. Tell them the last day available for care. And then tell them you have a letter outling everything for their records. Keep a copy for yourself. My advise would be to do it after you have received payment for the final two weeks or you run the risk of getting stiffed.

I like to do it at the end of the week, after I've recieved payment. I will hand the client an envelope on their way out the door and ask them to take a look when they are home. If they have any questions I will be available until 9pm for a phone call.

If they ask what it's about then I'll simply say, " I'm not able to care for XXXX anymore, it's all explained in the letter, I don't like to discuss these things in front of the kids. I will be available all night if you would like to discuss"

I did terminate by email once.

It was a client that paid me by email money transfer. And it just happened that the day I was prepared to term she forgot to send payment. So I had to wait until I recieved payment before I sent the email. She didn't come back and I was afraid of un nessasary confrontation.

The positive is that I didn't have to see her again. The negative is that I sat on the edge of my seat waiting to hear a response. I had to send a second email to confirm that she recieved the first one.
