I like to do it at the end of the week, after I've recieved payment. I will hand the client an envelope on their way out the door and ask them to take a look when they are home. If they have any questions I will be available until 9pm for a phone call.
If they ask what it's about then I'll simply say, " I'm not able to care for XXXX anymore, it's all explained in the letter, I don't like to discuss these things in front of the kids. I will be available all night if you would like to discuss"
I did terminate by email once.
It was a client that paid me by email money transfer. And it just happened that the day I was prepared to term she forgot to send payment. So I had to wait until I recieved payment before I sent the email. She didn't come back and I was afraid of un nessasary confrontation.
The positive is that I didn't have to see her again. The negative is that I sat on the edge of my seat waiting to hear a response. I had to send a second email to confirm that she recieved the first one.
