    Yeast Infections in Toddlers

So I have a DCG who has had a yeast infection for over a week now. She was seen by her Dr. and given a topical cream as it is on the outside. However, the cream does not seem to be working and in fact, I just changed her diaper and it looks worse today than it did yesterday. I think it may even have spread out a bit more. She also came to daycare with a spot near her mouth. I'm not sure if it is from her drool or if it has spread to her mouth.
I looked on the internet and it looks like she can't spread it to any of the other children.
Anyone dealt with a persistent infection in a toddler? Is there anything I can suggest to the parents to help get rid of it? I suggest acidolphulous (sp?) this morning and possible yogurt baths if it gets bad enough..... I told her to go to a walk in clinic to get it looked at again.

When my daughter was a toddler she had a yeast infection that wouldn't go away, took her back to the doctor and it had apparently turned into a bacterial infection that needed a new prescription cream which cleared it right up after that. I'd suggest too that they need to take her back to the doctor like you mentioned to them.

I would suggest that she go back and get something stronger. Also, make sure you give her some yogurt.

Cranberry juice. I read in the paper that research was in progress about the help of cranberry juice. On my first weeks of being pregnant I had it and since I read about it that same day I felt the symptoms (I had had it before several times so I know how it feels) I drank it all day and every day once a day during my pregnancy. Every month I was checked for yeast infection since I was told that pregnant women that got it have high probabilities to have it more times during the pregnancy. I did not get yeast infection during the whole pregnancy. After that when I feel the symptoms I drink cranberry juice several times during the day and and usually I do not have the symptoms the next day.

What cream is she using. It may be that she simply needs a different one or a stronger one. I just recommend clotrimozole that you buy over the counter at the drug store. It will say for ringworm and athletes foot and jock itch but a yeast infection in the diaper area will clear up with it really well.

The doctor's version for my daughter years ago was half clotrimozole and half 1% hydrocortizone cream.

    Thanks ladies.
A&C- I will suggest the cranberry juice.
Playfelt- she has the clotirmozole, but it has been seven days, and not getting much better.
I have the clotrimozole/hydrocortizone cream for my own daughter, and it works well on her.
I think she needs a stronger cream, because what she has just isn't clearing it up. In fact today it looks worse than it did yesterday.

My son had thrush when he was new and we used grapefruit seed extract (diluted!!!) on his bum and in the laundry with his cloth diapers. This was in addition to a prescription, we did nystatin first, and turns out he needed a stronger one (I think it was flucanazol?). His pediatrician mentioned that she will often start at the stronger prescription, as she's noticing that the nystatin and other "softer" versions aren't even effective anymore.

Hi Bookworn, let me know how cranberry juice works for her. I would like to know how it works for others. I never again have to take medications for a yeast infection again since the cranberry juice thing. Since I discovered it have not met someone else that I could recommend it. I serve dried cranberries to my kids very often, though.
