    Hello everybody!

Fortunately, I stumbled on this site as I surfed for information. I'm planning for my daycare which will tentatively open in January 2014.

I've had extensive childcare experience(s) (operated my own daycare for more than 10 years - but that was way, way years ago). I've become a nanny since - and still work as a nanny for two wonderful families. I might end up having the kids in my daycare - which will be most wonderful indeed for we've already have bonded.

I feel like a dinosaur in the daycare business - a lot of changes must've happened while I was gone. So I'm trying to brush up....

I've got butterflies in my tummy....

Just a word of warning. Having the kids you currently nanny in your daycare might make for a difficult relationship with the parents. When you are a nanny it's their rules etc but once you run your own business you will have your own policies etc that will probably differ from what you were doing for them e.g. hours. They may not be able to adjust or see you as a business professional.

    Welcome!

Hi Betsy I have been operating my home daycare closing in on 28 years and yes there have been a lot of changes. Biggest one is the ages in care now that there is a one year mat leave meaning children don't enter care till close to a year old - right about the worst time to uproot their entire life and make them start over bonding with another adult, other kids, new environment etc. but we make it work.

However my recent experience is that children are coming into care although a year old not up to what we would expect developmentally as in many are not walking, eating table foods, using a spoon, using a sippy cup, off the bottle, very few words if any. Once you set your own expectations aside and just accept each child where they are at regardless of age you will fall into a groove very quickly as you have lots of experience.

The business side of home daycare has for sure changed over the years where we now have multi-page contracts with rules and regulations both caregiver and parent are expected to follow and we are much more rigid in our expectations. If not parents will take advantage of you and that is one of the sad realities that has changed over the years.

As far as rules and regulations go each province still dictates how many children you can have in care, whether you need to be licensed or not and the numbers and ages of children can vary depending on the licensing rules. If you let us know what province/area you are in there may be someone nearby that can share more specific details for your area.

If you go to the home page for daycarebear and put in your postal code it will bring up a list of caregivers starting with those closest to you. Look at any pictures posted, note the hours of care, fees being charged and read their descriptions. This will give you a good idea of what the norms are for your area.

And do feel you can ask any question that pops into your head on the forum as we all had those same questions when starting out and always nice to get several different ideas to choose from.
