I also found when I was offering that it was often those making minimum wage with few skills that were basically picking up the same jobs a high school student could have done so they were only making about $7-10 an hour themselves thus wanting to pay very little. Also of course competing against the high school student who is willing to come to their house and do it for $20 a night didn't help either.

At the time I had 4 kids of my own with a 10 year age span so an extra one or two never really made that much difference.

I would never even consider doing it!

The child has to be in care for the 24 hours and then you would be more like a residential group home. As long as each child is only in care for part of the day it is up to you how much of the day you operate. It is like having two separate businesses in a sense or at least that is the interpretation I have been told in the past.

Yes indeed, after reading the advices given, I can clearly see that there's more reasons not to do it.

I see myself waking up several times during the night, checking the
kid(s) if they're alright - it will be very stressful.

Overnight care for sure opens up too many issues. But there is still a demand for second shift. I have even seen caregivers that did only second shift so had their daytimes to themselves and had the kids come to care just in time for nap. Good part was parents expected less in terms of programming and just lots of freeplay. A good option for someone that also has another self -employed business they want to do in the daytime.

What time is the second shift usually? What is expected, and how much is the competitive rate?

I have to say that I feel nervous because of the investment we're going to plunk down. I'd like to be able to pay down as quickly as we can, thus I am attracted to extending the business hours.

Problem is overlap in that day shift is often 7-3 and second 3-11 but you would have both kids at 3 when one set of parents is coming and other has to drop off to get to work.

Other option to look into especially if you have a hospital nearby is doing the 12 hour shifts. For that parents generally work 7am - 7 pm s need care about 14 hours ie 6 am to 8 pm. That still gives you a full night's sleep. Fee would be about 1 1/2 times your daily rate because of the 3 meals and 3 snacks. But also they would only be there 3-4 days a week because they do so many days on and so many days off on a rotating schedule which is set well in advance.

What would be a reasonable amount to charge parents that work a 7pm-7am shift?
