Any tips how to get a 3 year old to dress himself after potty if parents aren't doing so at home?

Give them lots of time!! They will eventually pull their pants up! Ask him to pull his pants up and tell him you will be right back than come back in a few moments to see how it's going.

Also, dolls with dress up clothes will help them practice and practice and practice!

If you stop doing it for them their only option is to do it themselves or stand there and get bored. Most will at least attempt it eventually.

This is a pet peeve of mine. I wish parents wouldn't do everything for their children and realize their potential. Start showing him how to do it, encourage him, get him to try at least a few times before you give him some help. Continue to let him do it on his own everyday. Maybe tell mom that you have been working on him pulling up his own pants after potty time. hint hint - maybe she should be working on it at home.

I had a family actually ask me if I could dress their 4 year old to go outside. Their daughter was capable of getting dressed. I told mom that she can do it and I will help her if she needs. I never had to. I made a big deal of it when mom picked up and said to the girl "Go tell Mommy that you got dressed all by yourself today"! she was so excited to tell mom. Mom actually started getting her to do it herself after that.

My toilet training policy states that children must be able to verbally tell me that they need to go and that they also must be able to dress themselves (pull up/down their pants) before I will work with them here.

I would tell the parents that being able to pull up his pants is part of the toileting process and a skill he needs to learn.

I have the same thing right now. 20 months old is way too early to start training IMO. I think it is fine to start introducing the potty at home but I think it is too young to actually expect the child to be truly trained. Her mom mentioned she is trying to train at home. I haven't really given it much effort here at all yet. I have a 2.5 yr old dcg who is still having accidents often.

Exactly why I changed my potty training policy. Mom of an 18 month old asked about the potty. Um, no. I also had a 2.5 yo here that was barely verbal, no self-help skills, no understanding of when he was wet or dry and she started to ask about toilet training. So I quickly came up with my new policy I also don't allow underwear until they are accident free HERE for 1 month, at my discretion to allow it earlier.

I have figured things out as I've gone along. You will learn what works and what doesn't, and what you can put up with or not. My policy handbook is ever evolving. It started out covering issues I expected to have and quickly grew to cover issues I was experiencing. It is very lengthy and I am still adding to it

I have a very basic potty training policy. They must be able to do most of the work themselves(I help with handwashing), tell me they need to go and be accident free here for 2 weeks before they can come in underwear.

While I do agree that for most children, under 2 seems to be too early to start. However, I do know children who were potty trained at or before they were 2. Normally I do it case by case here but starting Monday I will have 2-2.5 year olds, 2-2 year olds and an 18 month old (2 are part time). Only one 2.5 year old is fully potty trained and she has been for quite some time. I kept her in diapers at naptime for longer than she needed but only because I had diapers to use up and I didn't have her out of the playpen yet. Starting in mid-late February I am going to be introducing the potty to the other 3 oldest. We will start by talking about the potty, sitting on it with clothes on, reading potty books etc. The 18 month old will be included when he's here but it won't be aimed at him. The 2-2 year olds moms have said both children are interested in the potty and they will be wanting to start training soon. I think one 2 year old will be ready but the other 2 year old and 2.5 year old don't seem to be there yet but that is fine. I find it easier when there is more than one training so I will see how it goes....who knows, they may surprise me!! I'm hoping that come March, at least 1 or 2 of them will be ready to start going on the potty. It's been so cold here that we hardly get outside so it's a perfect time to start training and then hopefully come summer we can be an almost all fully potty trained daycare!
