Wonderwiper, for me I would charge for the inconvenience. I have given you a receipt, you should be responsible enough to not loose it. Plus now I have extra paperwork to hand in to my accountant as well. It's not a HUGE inconvenience but if you are writing out duplicate receipts multiple times it would get annoying quickly. (at least to me, but I have no patience lol) Also, some people give out their SIN number (which I do NOT do and do NOT recommend but to each their own) and if you lost your receipt with my name and SIN on it I would be ticked off!

I don't know so these are just my assumptions/guesses..please correct me if I'm wrong!! 1. email receipts are probably fine but if the family gets audited would they not need a hard copy receipt or can they just print off your email? 2. photocopies could be not accepted because if a couple is divorced can only one parent claim the childcare? Photocopies would essentially allow both parents to claim it? If you know the answer to these questions please let me know

I give a yearly receipt only so no paperwork at all. I make a little Word file that gives parents the total for the year. They can print it off if they want or if they use an accountant. It doesn't matter how many copies there are, the receipt has the child's name on it, not the parents. If divorced parents tried to both claim, that would be their fraud problem not yours. A similar example would be the receipts I get for activities my daughter is registered for. They email me a receipt as I can claim for the child fitness tax credit. I can print 20 copies but that doesn't mean I can claim 20 activities.

DH is an accountant and I asked him about your question this morning to double check what I thought.

I have a receipt book that I got at staples that has duplicates.... So I put the parents name at the top and then in the middle section where it says description I write "daycare for xxxxx " and I put the months it covers like jan -dec 2013 ...... Then the top copy goes to the parents and the dupe goes to my acct..... If the parent losses it and I have to make another I write duplicate on it .... Just for my own piece of mind

So Mom may physically write the cheque but Dad can claim it to lower his taxes etc. You can write a receipt on a napkin in lipstick for all RC cares, ha ha!

If they get audited all they would have to prove is payments to you. Yet another reason why I don't understand the providers that don't give receipts!

I appreciate that your husband is an accountant Wonderwiper but you absolutely do need a receipt for payment for daycare. I have had two daycare parents be audited over the years. One was about 5 years ago and the other was last year. The first parent was given specific instructions on what should be included and the other needed a copy of the receipt as she never kept hold of it in case she was audited. The receipt must have the parents name on it of who will use the expense to claim, the name of the child, the time period in question, amount paid and the name and address of service provider and location care was provided. As I said this has happened twice where the CRA were quite clear on what had to be on the year end receipt. I don't believe we need a year end receipt if we supply monthly or weekly receipts but those details must be included otherwise if you are audited then you will require a rectified replacement.

I am not offering professional advice to anyone obviously. My point about the receipts was simply that it didn't matter how many copies were given out. For the record, my sister has been audited every year for the past 6 years as she works here and overseas. She uses her cancelled cheques as proof of daycare payment. She provides the contact details of her babysitter (she uses an occasional sitter) and the cheque stubs to the auditor. I presume they are then matched with
what the provider has claimed. I was simply mentioning the lack of receipts as a side comment about providers that don't give them and that it is possible for parents to still claim.

I will have to add the child's name and my address from now on. I just put both parents names on the receipt and they can do what they like with it.

I do the same as you 5 Monkey's. Both parents name, amount, dates that the receipt covers and I just write daycare on it. Haven't had any issues. I have had 2 parents audited once. The only think I had to give them was my SIN No.
