I think that what you are doing is fine and it's what I've done with a young group as well. Basically for the little ones I have to be specific and say "go get that doll and put it away" or " get that car and put it away please". If I just ask them to clean up they give me a blank stareI tend to expect them to help out a lot more when they are 2-2 1/2.
