Bill 10- Child care workers children included in #'s- What do you think?

Hey, I'm getting some info on this new Bill 10 about including our own children in our dc #'s. Here's the information I received:

If you were unaware that there was a Bill put forth or are unfamiliar with what exactly is being proposed, please visit www.whatisbill10.weebly.com. However, the change that will most likely affect you is that we will now be forced to include our own children under the age of six years in our numbers (the limit of five). I myself will soon have two children. If this goes through I will have to ask two families to find care elsewhere and my income would essentially be cut in half, leaving me unable to help provide for my own family or forced to raise my rates significantly to make up for the lost income. Furthermore, with so many providers in the same boat as I am, the amount of daycare spaces would be reduced to the point of causing a childcare crisis in Ontario. No one is going to be able to find care for their children. Parents with little ones under two would be the worst off.

The government is doing this in the name of safety. However, there will be no more oversight into independent daycare than there is now, only fewer children in care and bigger fines should a daycare be caught running illegally. Agency affiliated daycares will be allowed more children, but will still only be checked once per month.

A group of Independent Childcare Providers and concerned parents across Ontario have gotten together and formed a coalition to fight for changes to this Bill. We’re called the Coalition of Independent Childcare Providers of Ontario (the CICPO). I’ve attached information about us in the document called MISSION. I was hoping you would be interested in joining us to help avoid a childcare crisis and help Independent Providers stay in business. The more people we have fighting for change, the better our chances.

Please read through the information before dismissing it as inapplicable to you. This bill will affect everyone in one way or another.

If you are interested in join the CICPO please email me back at agibson.cicpo.toront o@gmail.com. I have brochures you can hand out to parents, letters you can send to your local MPP, letter templates for your clients to use to send to their MPP and a facebook page where you can stay up to date on what is going on with the Bill. I urge you to forward this email to any other childcare providers you know in your community. The bill will go into its second reading in October so we need to get our voices heard now. There will also be a provincial day of action in later September where we are looking for your support in attending.

I'd be interested in the day of action but how much notice is going to be given to providers of the specific date? To have the parents onside is very important. Inconveniencing them for this cause is one thing, but last minute with little notice could cause lash back from parents or could result in a smaller turnout of providers who aren't going to join in if enough notice isn't given......

If you're at all interested in learning more or participating in the Day of Action, please join the Coalition's facebook page! There are also many city and area Chapters with their own pages (I'm the lead of the Belleville one)

As of now, the Day of Action will probably be held in mid-late October. The Coalition was advised that it is better to wait until parliament is back in session. Providers will be given as much notice as possible.

Also take a look at whatisbill10.weebly. com for more info on this bill, and the facebook page "Ontario Families and Caregivers Against Bill 10" for more discussions.

This bill really will start a childcare crisis in this province, and will put many of us out of work and unable to find care for our own children if we are forced to shut our doors.

I'm the Chapter Lead for Newmarket. There will be plenty of notice for the day of action. I would suggest that you discuss this with your clients, as I have done. Inform them of Bill 10, the Coalition's mandate and the day of action. The last I heard, it's now been bumped back to October. There will definitely be notice, but how much, I cannot say. Given that these are also providers, they'll likely consider that aspect when sorting it out. But it is probably a very good idea to give your clients a heads up as to what's coming down the pipe and why.

Most importantly, please, please get involved with this group. If you want changes to the bill, this is about your only shot at getting them. I've been absolutely astounded, after all the screaming on the internet about the damage this bill will cause, that I've been stonewalled by providers at every turn. We're doing this for you, your jobs, the families who rely on us and for the childcare industry. Your involvement is absolutely crucial! I know you're all busy...so am I. But we really need to pull together on this, even if it's inconvenient.

Thanks for keeping us up to date on this site. I do not have Facebook and have no intention of opening an account for any reason so it's invaluable that forum members like you guys keep me and others informed via this site. The weebly website doesn't offer much in the way of updates, I imagine that's what Facebook is being used for. Thanks everyone.

Bright Sparks, do you want the info packets to pass on to your parents? Also, there's a provider letter and client letter to MPP. If you're interested in passing some stuff around, I can forward a few things to you.

Yes that would be fantastic. Is it all email or snail mail?

I'm stunned you aren't already having to do so.

In NS we are forced to include our own children until their 12th birthday, even if they are never in the house during business hours. We are forced to include any house hold children, until they are 12 so those with step children who live part-time with their parent, lose a FT place even if the step-children are only here every second week.

    Admittedly our limit is 6.

Edited to add - the limit of 6 remains even if registered with an agency. Any in-home carer in the province, regardless of registration status, agency affiliation, - it's 6 children per address. Additional adults do not permit an increased number of children.

We are allowed 6 plus our children in Alberta , the example it gives is ,"if you have 3 kids , you are allowed to have 9 kids in your care ", so we do not have to count our children (so far)
