    Potty training and poop

Looking for advice on a very unpleasant topic. I have a new 2.5 year old dcg, has been with me full time for almost a month. Am trying to potty train her but am finding that her pooping is getting in the way. Her mom insists she is "totally potty trained" at home, but she is a first time mom and she is no where near potty trained when she is with me.

But anyway, she often has frequent loose poops during the day. The mom told me they took her to the doctor about it and they were told she is drinking too much juice. So there is a noticable change when she has been at daycare a few days and I give her little to no juice. But she came back today after daycare being closed yesterday and she had 3 poops before lunch - one that went all inside her pants as I didn't have her in a pullup when we went outside (NOT fun to clean up!). The dcg was also upset she pooped herself and covered her face.

So this makes me suspect the parents are not making enough of a dietary change at home.

I am finding this affects potty training as she never poops on the potty and having to change her poopy bum several times a day makes it difficult to get the potty training done.

Anyone dealt with this before? It is a good thing she wears disposible pullups otherwise because cleaning poop out of panties or cloth pullups is awful.

I am thinking a talk with mom about her diet needs to happen. I haven't thought to ask if she poops on the potty at home.

She is always in pullups in the house, but when we go in the backyard I will sometimes take the pull up off and take the potty chair out with us. I also have a policy that a child must go several weeks accident free before I will even consider panties only. It is my decision when they go diaper or pullup free.

I actually hadn't thought of the pooping as part of my diarrhea policy, i have a two or more diarrhea poops and they go home policy. I don't know why but I never thought of the two as the same situation.

I don't feel as day care providers we have the right to suggest to a family they make dietary changes. The fact the parents are already aware that her poops are loose and the fact they've been told the juice makes the problem worse, is good information for them to have.

It just sounds like this girl isn't ready.

I had a girl in my care that had the same problem. I suggested a trip to the doc and they brushed me off. It is not normal to have that amount of poops especially that loose. I had one day I counted 6 loose poops!. I started calling mom after poop number 3 ( only loose ones) for pick up . She picked up often and of course mom said it never happened at home. I could never be sure if it was an illness or not. Mom pulled out of care not too long after. I miss the little sweetheart but I sure don't miss all that poop!!!

Thing is, the mom took her to the doctor herself and told me about it. So I'm left dealing with the problem.

I totally believe juice can be the reason for loose poops but how much juice is she getting for it to be this bad in just one day??

I would just keep telling the mom every day how many poops she had (altho, I'm sure sending home all the dirty laundry would be the first clue lol) and keep stressing to mom how you haven't given her any juice at daycare. Hopefully mom picks up on this.

I would also be telling mom that until her poops become more solid or she starts telling you when she needs to go that you will require her in diapers for sanitary reasons.

I also would be calling for pick up if she has more than 2 or 3 loose poops (can't remember what you said was your policy). This should hopefully prompt mom to take the juice thing seriously and quit giving her so much!

Talked to mom at pick up and turns out she spent the previous day at grandmas, so who knows what she ate and drank. I told mom that the pooping was really interferring with the potty training and so she said she wasn't giving her any more juice at all and would make sure everyone knows not to give her any. So hopefully this will make enough of a change. The doctor apparently said she has an intolerance for the sucrose in juice, so it guess it is enough at one day of juice does affect her.

Hopefully next week will go better and we will see some really good potty training success soon. I believe she is ready for it.

It is always pullups or diapers if the poop can't be contained in the pullup till they are doing it consistently in the potty with the child initiating they have to poop - no exceptions regardless of age or other stage of potty training. It is possible to take a diaper off - open one leg and pull down to use when potty training. Underwear is not for training - it is a privilege for when we are trained.
