    Safety pin question

I have a little guy who just turned two. He has taken to unzipping his sleep sack and climbing out of the playpen. He has done this repeatedly over the last few weeks.
I have tried a few things. Not putting him in the sleep sack (he repeatedly climbs out). Putting him on the floor on a mat in the sleep sack, which he takes off and the has a jolly time exploring my bedroom in the dark. Staying with him until he falls asleep without the sleep sack on the floor, which is ok, he falls asleep in about 10-15 minutes. But it seems that when he falls asleep on the floor, he wakes up after about one hour and then does the same with taking off the sleep sack and exploring quietly.

I had the idea of using a safety pin to pin the sleep sack closed. I'm just concerned about it being a safety issue if he could actually open the pin and poke himself.
When in the sleep sack and playpen he usually naps at least two hours.

At home he has never used a sleep sack and is a terrible napper on the weekends.

IMO he is too young to sleep on a mat.

    Any ideas or suggestions?

Not all kids needs to nap as long as we would wish they would. If he's sleeping for an hour, that might be his lot, especially if he's sleeping well at night.

I put mine on a mat in my room once they turn two as our regs are that we aren't allowed them in cribs after their 2nd birthday and we aren't allowed playpens for sleeping either.

It's never been an issue. Sure, the first week I sometimes have to go up and remind a child to stay on the mat but it's rare.

I would think, if this little one can get out of most things, it won't take him long to figure out a safety pin. LOL

I'm not familiar with sleep sacks but had the same thought as homeschoolmom, could you put it on backwards and zip it up or does it not have a zipper?

I also thought the same as Rachael and think he will likely undo the pin or pop it open and hurt himself.

I'm thinking consistency is going to be the answer here. Just keep going in and putting him in the playpen or back on the mat and hopefully he will eventually "get" the rule that he has to stay put until it's time to wake up

Good idea but it zips up the side :-) But I might look into getting a new sleep sack that I can zip up the back. Good idea!
He is transitioning to a regular bed at home and is taking hours to fall asleep at night... I think at my house he wakes up after about an hour when he rolls around and probably rolls onto the carpet off the mat.
We have a very active morning almost completely outdoors so he is very tired! I guess he just needs to get used to being on the mat.
Forgot to mention... Now that he just turned two mom decided to wean him off his naptime and bedtime bottles so that's another struggle.... I know I should not have allowed him to have it and now I'm paying for it!

I was at Target tonight and noticed the sleep sacks!! They had ones that zipped down the front so turning it around wouldn't be an issue I don't think. They were $28.99
