    Assistant salary

    Hi,

How much would you pay a full-time daycare assistant?

You would, I imagine, have to pay them minimum wage if they are an employee of the daycare.

thats what i was afraid of if you break it down in Ont here i don't even make minimum wage some days .I realy want to hire a assistant for the summer to lend a hand at the splash pool and more so with a program for the few school aged kids to keep them busy and from underfoot of the babies.

I'll have to maybe try to balance it and see if their are any coop students that need hours and then maybe offer them a few extra paid hours

If you are looking for just an extra set of hands you mind find some very capable 13-15 year olds that are too young to get a "real" paying job which means the wage would be less. Babysitting does not pay minimum wage so look for what parents in your area are offering when looking to hire a highschool student to look after their kids for the summer and go from there. You might be able to reduce the hours to only needing them half a day and paying them by the hour. I was lucky in that for many years I had my own kids that I could make use of in the summer and it worked really well because I have a child with intellectual disabilities and while she was slow at many things academic she loved the kids, was great once she learned a routine and they loved her back. I would never leave her unattended with the kids but she was those extra hands and eyes I needed. I paid her $50 a week - I know cheap deal.

All high school students in Ontario need 40 hours of community service to graduate. This is a great way to get that...volunteering with a daycare? Maybe you could post an ad on kijiji saying something of the sort. You could call your local highschool first and speak with the guidance councilor to make sure it qualifies. I bet you would get a lot of hits from teenage girls. Perhaps ask your church or local church if they'd let you post such an ad on the bulletin board too.

highschool students cannot use helping at a daycare as community service hours. It must be done doing something that is not normally a paid position.

I do believe community service hours can be used in a home daycare as it is not normally a paid position. Seeing that legally you cant have more than 5 children in a daycare in a home and normally you wouldnt hire help, then if a student volunteers to assist with activities to enhance the program then it would count as community service..ie volunteering to run am group games from 9-11 assist with splashpad / outings, and or walking children to and from school (as that is not normally part of daycare services, that is an extra service that can be considered volunteer unless that person is paid for that additional service of getting kids to /from school). Hope that helps. Students are wonderful allies. As are ECE students on summer break.

Depends a lot on the school and how they interpret the rules. If you are using a high school student for a particularly difficult to handle child then it would count as working with a child with special needs. Those needs could simply be that for the age of the child they hadn't mastered walking beside the stroller in a trustworthy fashion but was too old to ride. That would qualify.

In BC the assistant must have a criminal record search and letters of reference. If they are substituting while you are not present they must be an adult with criminal record search, 20 hours of child development, letters of reference. and have a psychological evaluation.
I would be a sub. $12.00 per hour, if this is just an assistant I would pay $8.50 per hour.

A few tips...

Always ensure that your child receives quality care by taking the time to investigate the provider and by asking for references! We simply cannot verify the claims of every daycare provider.
Updates
We expect providers to keep their listing and available openings up-to-date. However, to prevent oversights, openings expire after 45 days.
