    Does my college degree mater?

    Hi everyone,
thank you for this wonderful forum, it's very helpful.
I have a quick question: If I want to open a home-based daycare, is it mandatory to have a degree Education or it doesn't really matter (it can be IT, Business, Art or any etc)?
Or do I have to be a member of the Early Childhood Education College?
I read all documentation on the government website but it's not clear to me.
    Hope you can help
    Thank you.

Anyone can open a home daycare but hopefully you do it because you love children, want to be a dedicated provider, follow all the Daycare Nursery Act rules, put a great program in place with safety, education, fun filled play and much, much more. There are people with degrees and who worked in centres and there are good old Moms who want to stay home with their children but be a self-employed business woman and a whole spectrum of us in between.

    Where are you located?

In Alberta the only difference a degree makes is for wage top-up. If you have schooling that they determine "applicable" to the childcare field, you can make some extra cash. Other than that, nothing but love and organization is necessary.

Not sure about other provinces though.

The laws are dependent on where you live. Perhaps if you told us what province you are in we could better help you with the laws and regulations of that province.

However, what a GOOD provider needs is patience, a good business sense, a lot of self-respect and self-worth, a liking for children, excellent time-management skills, the ability to multi-task, and some general knowledge about children and their developmental stages etc.
